Is that literally floating when they load it up or does it have little legs on it, just in case?

I worked on this one 2 years back, it's a semi submersible DP rig, means it stays in position just on it's own thrusters and when they do really heavy lifts they submerge it about 20 mtrs or so in the water. In the picture it floated all the way up, it submerges till where the red paint changes to the black paint when doing heavy lifts.

Was built in the 80's, in the cabins there are stickers on the wall that say 'contains asbestos, do not touch' , food was horrendous even though it's an Italian vessel, even the pizza was crap! Has a maximum personnel capacity of 700 and costs between 500.000 and 1.000.000 a day according to the marine crew i spoke to.

They have a 100 tonnes crawler crane on deck for the 'small' stuff, quite impressive to see it all, have 2 cnc plasma tables on deck and about 50 welders per shift going non stop welding all kinds of grillages, caissons,...

I guess that both the jib recoil combined with the movement of the whole unit caused by ballast of the ship accelerated the jib - until it stopped - but the jib didn't

Definitely didn't like the whiplash and because the ship was moored next to the dock, it did stop rolling suddenly. Wonder if it might have survived had the ship been able to roll gently to a stop rather than clouting the harbour wall.

My neighbor worked onto something like this floating crane which is not big (5000 tons only?)
Anyway he worked on the Micoperi 7000 now known as the SAIPEM 7000
The hook is a single piece casting (60 tons maybe 10 meter tall ) 50 pulleys
The steel ropes are replaced every time they lift something big .

Back on topic he explained me that due to the counterweights ,the tensions and resonance.. they can't release the load quickly , because otherwise would happen something like what we in this thread or even worst ,theorycally the boat should be sinked

When my neighbor was on board they lifted a 13000 tons oil drilling rig (12 hours to release the load on cranes)
The lifting cables has been scrapped after the operation

They even lifted an entire platform with the crew inside

Same as being in a cherry picker, a good amount of accidents happen with people moving when the boom it right out they shake like crazy.

If you consider the leverage and weight its not surprising.


Unrelated, working on an abseiling job we were using the cradle and about 10 floors down one of the guys starting shaking the wire rope from above in the hope it would cure my dislike of being in it.... i was only on the ropes after that
