Today's task.
Make a start on the doors. Basic filler removal. This will be done in a couple of stages. Also have some cracks in the casting. Nothing to serious but will need sorting. I will v the cracks and nickel weld these.

Thanks zx9. I must admit this door filler was testing for sure. I should of soda blasted it but couldn't be bothered to set it up.

It's messy but I couldn't be bothered to set my compressor up and all the stuff that goes with it. Plus it coats me nothing in time. But blast media gets expensive

Today I assembled the compound slide while waiting for other parts to paint dry. There was a few little issues to sort. The screw had a very slight bend in it causing binding. Sorted this. A about a quarter of a turn of backlash but considering it's ages is good. Other than that it's nice and works a treat.

Another job done was to build the motor bracket. Installed new bearings . the pulley does run really close to the bracket. I will have to sort this.

Looking forward to seeing it complete, what are you doing about the flat belt? Keeping the old leather belt or fitting one of the jointless rubber ones?

With those type of bronze nut I fit the nut with the two retaining bolts just finger tight, install the screw and wind the compound all the way in then nip up the two bolts. This ensures that your screw doesn't bind when you wind the compound all the way forward.

Probably go for a jointless one. I was looking on lathes uk a they do a few different types

I looked at them but they are quite expensive for what they are, my mill's belt is in good condition but the metal joint is worn so I may just replace that an put up with the clacking noise.

I put a scarf joint in my leather belts. You have to be careful to make sure the joint isn't thicker but it's not hard to do and doesn't clack when the joint hits the pulleys.
If you do need to fit a new clip I have a crimping tool that anyone can borrow.

It's a clipper lacer, for use in a vice so I'm told.

How do you scarf joint and what glue do you use, I'd prefer that to the clip if possible.

I make a jig using two side plates and a piece in between fixed at a shallow angle. Clamp the belt to it and grind/sand/file the belt to a taper with a step at the end. Do both ends and then clamp the ends together in the jig. I used either evo stick or polyurethane glue, I can't remember.
