Today's task was to cut the reliefs in the carriage so I can scrape the dovetails in. A ass of a job cutting them. It's all scrape work for a while. Headstock spindle is next for fitment but the grease for the bearings is £130 for a 400ml tube. That will have to wait

I do them by hand. With a Manchester power hacksaw blade.

No mate. A industrial bearings supplier.

A couple of updates on the lathe. One side of the carriage is now complete. And a nightmare of a job it was.

Can I ask how do you blue the angled dove tail face for reference before scraping? Do you have a small thin straight edge for that? Looks great, cheers

That's for a regular hacksaw blade dieselkid. The Manchester blade I use are a lot taller and thicker.

Hi mazo. I have a dovetail straight edge for doing that. Camel back straight edges have a machined edge for doing them. The picture below is my camel back. I didn't use this tool on my carriage but have another straight edge that's the same thing

Yes mate they are very difficult to come by and very expensive to. You can make an alternative if you have a milling machine

First glance at the first pic makes it look like a big old lump of a lathe - then you notice the socket on the wall behind

One can only wonder about what kind of drug the designer was on when he came up with that apron arrangement...

Perhaps some sort of unique patent thing. There was quite a bit of that in the late Victorian period. Over complicating things didn’t seem to bother them - this is a set of Barrows garden shears from 1901, they work with a guillotine motion and lots of steel rivets with a central spring. Good for roses apparently, otherwise expensive to produce and no real advantage over conventional scissor types.
