I just cringe when I see machine tool fasteners chewed up with stillson marks and rounded-off nut flats - two things which are inevitable when using those two tools on machines.

I certianly cringe seeing pipe wrench or vice grips marks on stuff but that's a case of operator error, using the wrong tool for the application or poor quality gear.

The "initials" chiseled into double boosts Albrecht chuck saddens me greatly.

It's quite simple. Imagine you knew nothing about machines or tools etc but were thinking about buying a lathe for yourself. You do a search online (or watch countless youtube vids) and see this beautifully restored vintage machine with a pair of stillsons hanging on a nail behind it. What are you going to assume?

It does look sus I admit. I will sort this . My work place is having a major overhaul soon. This will be lots better.

Meh. After I got the feed shaft on mine freed (taper pin seized in gearbox, shaft has a U shaped end) I managed to get it stuck inside again because I’m an idiot I gripped the other end with stillsons and yanked hard, chewed into the metal a bit however importantly, got the shaft free. I’ve since cleaned up the chewn end on my other lathe. Everything with a purpose, and sympathetic application etc

They must be there for adjusting the headstock bearing preload?

Got the bracket in place after a lot of choice words. Alignment is good now. I got to do a little work on the bracket as the pulley is fouling the side of it. Please excuse the scratches but it was a nightmare to get in. And got take it out again. But it gives me a chance to design the belt adjustment mechanism that was originally operated from the front stand.

Thanks Scott. Its enamel paint. With enamel primer. It's easy to apply by hand.

Thanks, any particular brand? I've been using Cromadex 222 on recent projects but might try something different next time.

Its arcrite tractor enamel. Will take a picture of the tin .

Made a start on the bracket that holds the operating lever for belt adjustment speeds.

Finally back on doing the empire.
Found an original travelling steady. I paint stripped it. Removed all the filler and its had a good clean . Ready for primer and paint.

Tell me about it pete. I searched everywhere ever since I got the lathe. Also found a other fixed steady too. So now a complete set.

Because they have all been sold to people who bought a lathe with no steadies by people who robbed the steadies from lathes which then got sold on to people for the same money as if they were present. In fact, I do believe there were only ever one of each type made and they just keep going round and round being bought and sold but never actually used
