I made a travelling steady for my Monarch lathe even though I had the original because it was made to sit close to the the lantern tool post that typically came with older lathes and would foul the tool holder on my quick change tool post. So if you are looking at spending a lot of money for an 'original' it might well pay you to get fabricating and end up with something that actually works well with what you have.

There you go your picture shows what I mean exactly. If you're cutting towards the chuck (which you should do if you have the choice) that steady will be trailing the tool with that 4-way tool post unless you wind the compound right back but leading the tool with a lantern. A QCTP would be even worse. If I were to make that I would bring the upright bit to the far left so that it lines up with the edge of the cross slide.

Was thinking about going one better and having a few mounting points for the steady or a t slot.
I've got two t slots on my cross slide though
So gives me options.

Finding steadies is a full time job. I search every page on most machinery advertising sites. I always look at the background in pictures with stuff for sale. Its surprising what's laying a out. I spend a couple of hours every day hunting for goodies. I have machinery with no steadies that are totally obsolete. Since searching I have found two travelling steadies for my mellor lathe. One of them was for sale with a load of other stuff. The other one is still in the negotiations stages.
I'm making a new (longer) spindle for the front wheel of my trike, the original builder bless him had welded a bolt to the original then machined it down to make up the extra length. Guess how I found that out - yes, it was cracked all round...
Anyway, the spindle is 350mm or thereabouts with an 18 x1.5 thread on the end so I needed a steady.
So I've spent a couple of hours on cleaning and fettling the travelling steady that came with the truimph - It's been sat behind the lathe for 20 plus years and who knows how long before that. Works a treat - I think - I've never used one!
If all goes well I'll load up some pics, if....

Well. I got the steady in primer yesterday. And a coat of tops this morning. I had to do a brightspark on this and slap it on....the paint is starting to go off in the tin so had to hurry. (No offence brightspark) ...

I.tbink it's for a 17, can take some measurements - definitely doesn't fit my C13!

Any chance of measurements? Looks like a Holbrook steady, the proverbial rocking-horse dropping, with the third bolt lug sawn off...

Ok .steady has a 6.5 inch centre height.
3 1/4 bolt spacing.
1/2 bolt diameter.
1 3/4 offset.

Travelling steady all done. Held on by pre war whitworth. I have another fixed steady to do next. That will finish the set right off..

It's all here pete. I was going to make the missing parts that operate the belt adjustment. But have found another empire complete with the missing parts. On hold at the moment as in negotiations.

Also having trouble deciding on where to mount the vdf controller. Some are above the headstock but mine has a lid that opens to allow access to belts. So not sure yet.
