With that engine (motor to me means electric motor) you could move up one size of pump to a AC18/25, It just looks to me as if someone had that engine and decided to use it, which is ok, but you don't get more CFM out of the pump just because you have more Hp on tap, you get more CFM by spinning the compressor faster, so if it spins faster than the manufacturers specs then you are going to shorten its lifespan especially when working it hard like when blasting, that's the point I'm trying to make.

Give the valves a clean, a quick and easy job on these you just unscrew the big nuts on the head and they're there, the condition of the valves will give you some indication of what kind of life its had, is the oil clean etc, if looked after these pumps give long service.

That's it, but that one is too high a pressure for your needs as its 10Bar at its lowest I think, if it was me I would bring the pressure down on yours to make sure it works ok and unloads the inlet valves as it should, safety first and all that.

How to reduce it to lowest setting clockwise or anti clockwise.
I am not sure if mine is that one but it looks the same or similar could always be rated less, not that it would harm to wind it in to its lowest pressure setting

If its similar then you will be ok.

But it will not be ok , if it is not connected to anything with pressure in it !


I have one of these exact compressors with an indentical, chassis, tank and wheels it has a 3hp electric motor on it, the only difference is it was 3ph but I converted it to single, it has a copper cooler pipe on it from the cyl heads around the crankcase so that the air from the fan blows over it, that then connects to the u shaped res. that copper pipe is what is missing from yours, the sensing side of the pilot valve is connected to the other end of the u res. so that u res has to be in the circuit. The engine is NOT standard and HP is not linked to cfm the CC's of the pump x rpm are. up to the rated safe rpm, or the speed the atmospheric 1bar pressured air, can get into it!

Norm, if you look at mine in post 8 that senses the pressure at the inlet to the filter/separator, it doesn't matter where on the discharge side it monitors the pressure on the unit so long as it does, if Banny re connects the two half inch pipes together by coiling a copper pipe around or in front of the pulley he will be ok. mine doesn't have the discharge wound around the crankcase though just straight in. Now if he connects the discharge straight to the receiver by-passing the pilot valve, well that certainly would be a recipe for disaster I rightly or wrongly accredited him with some common sense.

I have re-read your comments on post 12, just put it back together as you say for mobile and when you want to connect to a tank connect it to the regulator outlet by the engine.

I would join the two pipes together or the pipe from head would go to tank and then return to the vertical pipe. Which would complete the system. this would be no different to joining the pipes together just the tank would be in the loop as to say. the tank has blow of valve fitted for extra safety.

Joining from the head to a tank and then from the tank to the vertical pipe would need two pipes though, going straight from the regulator to the tank only one.

tis true that, but I would of though if you had one pipe how would it work if you are using the air, but pumping air at same time they would meet in middle.
The tank is already set up for a feed and return anyway, plus it has a drain on the bottom.
don't suppose you have any ideas on the lever on the pulley is it just tensioned all the time, or was there some sort of spring mechanism that has been lost sometime.
I am going to get some copper pipe tomorrow, did think of 15mm but will convert to 22mm or is it not worth it.
read on here 22mm cools the air better twice as dear mind.

I totally agree regarding that the two 1/2 pipes need connecting together as in the standard setup, but from his original post he said he had connected the one off the head directly to the large res and it had blown off due to heat but was it also pressure?
I dont doubt that Banny probably has common sense but there are a lot of people out there that don't and I was concerned that he was building a potential bomb, it is better to be safe than sorry.
But I dont think from some of the posts that he fully understands compressor's and their operation and I realise that is why he is asking questions I just wanted him to stop and think, so that he would be safe.

The air can only flow from a high to a low pressure it does not matter which way round it is piped, BUT getting rid of the heat is important I have seen compressors plumbed directly from the cyl head with hydraulic hoses that can stand thousands psi but will burst because of the heat produced. That is why this compressor has the copper pipe from the head to the u shaped res so that no heat will get to any flexible hoses.

PS The pipe from a compressor head to res is always a potential weak spot and usually that is the first thing to fail on most compressors.
That is probably why it has been removed by the original owner because it had fractured.

Your right the heat blew the pipe due to heat, it expanded the pipe and blew it from its connection

We seem to be going round in circles here a bit, the best and quickest thing for you Banny would be to connect it up as near original as possible with 22mm, unless you have some 3/4" soft copper handy. copy my little AC7, once you have done that you will get a better understanding of how it works.
Norm you are spot on in what you say I missed that in his first post (I blame the drink )
Regarding the jockey wheel, belt tensioner I would hazard a guess that its there for just that because its easier or there`s not much room to move the engine or pump for belt tension.

just thought I would update where I am at now.
have piped it up as pics show, but it seems like the pilot valve is not doing its job as it is leaking air straight no pressure build up.
so should this be wound right in to compress the spring so it holds pressure.
what I don't get is why is the air feed to to the filter separator so small bore, when 22mm has been used from pump head to res.
not sure why photos are upside down even flipped the as they showed upside and they appeared upside down.

The original copper pipe is about 1/2 od but quite thick walled about 1.5 mm wall thickness so the ID would be about 9-10mm.
where is the air leaking out ? or is there a constant feed to the unloader valves? .
