Hi all. I'm in the process of making a blasting cabinet or should i say getting one i made a long time ago to work. i'm looking for a piece of toughened glass for the front. has anyone got any ideas. just wondered what other people have used maybe from a scrap yard ? as you can see i havent cut a hole i the lid yet. i used to have a piece of clear plastic in the lid but i want a glass window possibly held in by windscrean rubber so i've replaced the plastic with steel but not yet cut the hole in it

Have a look for lexan, they use some grades of it for bullet proof glass.

If you're just using it for bead blasting you won't need to protect the glass, but for grit blasting you'll need a plastic film.

i'm going to protect the glass as i'm going to use it for grit blasting. i have used the cabinet before with a suction gun but with limited sucsess so i'm going to mount a pressure pot underneath with a large ball valve in the bottom of the cabinet to allow the grit to return into the pot those popup valves are too pricey

That's my plan, don't forget you'll need to sieve the grit before re-using it.

if you can ''drop across'' a piece of toughened glass at the ''right price'' as you haven't yet cut your opening that's your cheapest solution, if you want it in clayton rite rubber as commercial plant uses you are better going to a ''cab glass'' company & getting the zipper rubber & either toughened or 6.4 laminated glass with radiussed corners & making your opening to suit the size you want, toughened cannot be cut or worked whereas laminated can, as a footnote when I built my cabinet I used laminated & zipper gasket, 30 odd yrs ago & still going strong, polycarbonate or acrylic will not last long due to being scratched unless you keep putting a sacrificial piece in front of it.

i've had acyrilic in the top and like you say it just goes frosted in no time. useless realy but will i still have to protect toughened glass?

you could use a small one but better off with a larger one if posible. as said use laminated glass with rubber gasket and u deffo need some sacrificial plastic inside. hold it on with double sided scotch tape

I was thinking more of having a roll of film passing under the glass and draw it down as it becomes opaque.

Mount the roll outside the cabinet, pass it inside under the glass at the top and back out again at the bottom.

would be ok as long as the air and dust cant get between the glass and film

what are the tear off visors like? have you ever tried mounting a pot underneath ?

Tear-off visors are expensive - for my blasting helmet I use cut-down Coke bottles, book cover film or clear florists cellophane.

I'd forget about the car type rubber seals if I was you.
Cost me a tenner for a piece of laminated glass with rounded edges for my Guyson cabinet and triple that for the rubber to hold it in

Plus it was a right **** to install. Wouldn't want to go throught that again.
Really needs changing now as the glass is slightly frosted, despite using film over.

If I was you I would cut out a rectangular hole and make a bolt on subframe over the top to make it easy to change the glass. Use some foam strip to seal.

Normal laminated glass from a galziers with square edges will be alot cheaper, buy several pieces at once.

Guyson modified their later cabinets to use this system.

My feelings exactly. Make the glass easily removeable to simplfy fitting the protection sheet if you use one.

Might be an idea to have a word with a glass supplier to see how many pieces he can cut without waste before you decide on the final dimensions of the piece of glass.
