You don't have to be a middle aged woman to get a bit panicky if the cat is late for food.
If in the mornings when I go to unlock my workshop - if the yard cat is not on the door step - meowing for it's breakfast.
I will have walk about the yard - whistling it - till it pops it head out of some new spot it has found to hide up in!

Slow worms I'll do but I am not going deliberately hunting for the snakes! We gingerly lift tarps and sheets on the ground here. They avoid us etc. I've only ever seen three adders here in nearly 40 years. Two dead and one live. In roughly the same locale on the property so we know they're there. First was dead, hung over the lowest bar of a gate on our property like it had got there and collapsed. Second I hosed out from where it had been under the car and it came straight into my then two year old "helping" me wash the car. Yes I got a bollocking from SWMBO. Third was crossing the road when a neighbour accidentally ran it over.
Luckily I guess we're the less sunny side of the valley. Opposite gets more morning and longer sun so is dryer/warmer. Come look for yourself, the clues in the name:

An aside on snakes but the BiL was excavating a sand school some years back and dug up a clutch of eggs. Must have been near to hatching as he stuck them in an ice cream box and baby grass snakes hatched.
More recently he was digging and moved an old water tank. A rather peed off snake came up over the front of the digger so he abandoned it. We think it was a barred grass snake as it was grey and a metre or so long.

A mate took his "barn cat" to the vets for it's annual jabs. The vet said it was so nice to see a "skinny" cat for a change.
When I say barn cat, it lives in luxury with another cat and Jack Russell in a stable full of pampered horses. It's a litter mate of our white one and an excellent ratter.
Hope for ours yet! Give him his due, he's pretty much single handedly cleared the garden of mice etc. If he can just sort the rats and grey squirrels and earn his keep. Him developing a taste for parakeets wouldn't go amiss either.

Our young one above has gone from an indoor cat, killing the odd spider and moth to an outdoor cat getting ever more confident. His coat isn't quite so soft, his pads are showing signs of wear and he has sprouted tufts out of his ears. Good too he's lost his paunch.
