Celica Gen 7 restoration.

I shouldn’t tell you but Iv seen a lot at the banger tracks whilst they are fast they don’t last long

a lot were broken so the engines could go in mr2s aswell as they only came with the 1zz

I suppose that the best way of looking at that is to hope that as the number remaining gets very small, prices might go up . Damn, but there are some truly ugly and boring cars around these days, but I would think that most people (with any interest in cars) would see the Gen7 Celica as a good looking and quite desirable car (unless they have been messed with... or are just too rusty).

Bought my missus a Celica when we first hooked up, God she loved that car, we did all sorts with it, Including using it as a skip for taking all the building crap from the house to the tip. Can't remember why we sold it to be honest.

I had an st182 1994 in metallic grey with 55k on the clock (FTSH)...sold for £600 locally (I still see it now and again)....doh!!!

Looking good on the restoration...Toyotas tend to rust in localised areas so they're very fixable.

Have these got the engine with the pre-cat issues or was that just the mr2 roadster?

The restoration is coming along slowly. Its hard with 2 kids, work and weather dependant. Im hoping I dont find any more areas like this but I reckon the offside sill will of gone in the same place. Its a common area on these.

No pre cat issues on these fortunately. The 1zz 140s pre 2003 had bad oil burnng issues but it never affected the 190s.

I can imagine. You can get them (or used to) cheap, and are relatively easy to fix.

Well I just checked and there is 639 left (107 SORN) from the original 1000. I have noticed they are climbing in price. I bought mine for 5.5k with 60k on the clock and I reckon I could sell it for about the same once the refurb has been done. Maybe even more, but thats not going to happen.
I totally agree about how cars look these days. I think its mad the design of this car is 22 years old!!!!!!

I did the same mate. When me and the missus first moved in we dropped the back seats and loaded it with IKEA furniture because I was too tight for delivery Damn......that car was slammed.....

Used the needle scaler to take off the old powdercoating on my calipers. In the bath they go.......

I had two Danish stalking clients. They came in a Celica and used it in the forest, they gave it hell and it survived the week.

The picture shows what the needle scaler does, but is that a better result than you'd get with a wire brush on an angle grinder? I've never used a needle scaler... but I don't have anything which is as rusty as that .

Personally I think it is mate. Reasons being ;
1. I have bad circulation in my hands, and using a angle grinder for prolonged periods does nothing for that.
2. With me being under the car and so close to my tools the last thing I need is the grinder bouncing off and hitting me in the face.
3. An angle grinder is a heavy lump and doesn't allow access to confined spaces.
4. Wire Brush attachments, I find, just don't get though heavy corrosion that easily, I'm not saying a scaler is instant but your hammering it off rather than rubbing the top of it.

It's certainly true that angle grinders, in unfavourable situations, can be "Hairy" to use. I'll add "needle scaler" to the "stuff I don't have, but needs consideration list" and see if it gets to the top .

That looks really good. The thing that's a bit worrying though is that you're working outside in February, so the temperature is low but the relative humidity is pretty high. Whatever paint you use, it would be worth looking at the tech data to see what the advice is on that. The usual concern is that you don't get close to the dew-point. But with it back to bare metal, you don't have much option but to paint it anyway. Might be worth (i) try finish painting by mid-afternoon and (ii) getting a covering over the car before the temperature drops too much .

In looking at jotun 87/90 they do a winter grade so can be used at low temperatures. It's been cover is phosphoric acid which I believe will give it a lay of protection. I don't think I'll get it painted for a couple of weeks but I need to key the surface before anyway so any rust will come off when I do that. I was surprised it hasn't shown any signs of rust. The wheel arch was done on Monday and has no coating over it and no corrosion has formed.

I took a look at my hygrometer this morning and it says the relative humidity is down around 40% whereas a few days ago it was up around 80%. That's really good news from your point of view and yes, the phosphate should offer it some protection.

I did a bit of rust removal under my 7 last autumn when it was a bit cool and damp, so I bought a little thermometer/hygrometer ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353844246138?hash=item5262c2b67a:g:AlsAAOSwmS1h1on7) which now hangs under my carport where I do the work. Some might think it's a bit OTT, but if you're going to work really hard preparing a surface, I think that it's worth bearing dew-point in mind, so on some days, I stopped work before the temperature started to fall and threw a cover over the car just to help things go well.

So the family is back and the work under the car stops. Its been a long slog all week but I reckon I'm about 80% there, with the paint prep. I reckon I've put the best part of 40 odd hours in this week on the underside. Found a few surprises along the way. If it hadn't of rained last weekend I reckon I would be ready to paint.
