Citric acid derusting

I had to use 2 sets of drain rods the other year to unblock the clay drain to our cess pool. I kept meaning to clean the rods.....

Consequently they've sat screwed together in a corner of the garden until nature did its thing and cleaned them for me. Having a tidy up this week and it did mean that getting them apart was a pig. The m/f threads are as rusty as!

However I've the leftover container I did the pipe cutter and adjustable in!

pop them back in a fresh batch of citric for a couple of days - you might find that they're not as bad as you think.

This. Excellent advice, thanks! I made the same mistake with my recently-acquired Record 84. The scale that came out of the tank and coated the vice was pretty thicK. A fresh batch of citric at 19:1ish seems to have saved the day. The castings are pretty rough. I have odered some beeswax to mix with linseed oil in case I wanted to go down the “naked vice” route. I may order some Paragon paint for it as option 2.

The grips are some sort of alloy. Drilled out 4 rivets that'll need replacing.

An old plastic biscuit "tin":

Leave in the sun. Not sure how to refinish the steel bits?

It looks like a seamans pocket knife.
Any where from 1930's to late 1990's.

Polish the alloy as normal and add a clear coat.

Get all the rust off and hit hard with a wire brush, get into all the crannies and nooks.

Warm the metal, you want it hot to touch, but not too hot to handle.

Then with a hard bee's wax and oil mix. Rub it in when the metal is warm.
Repeat..
Buff well.

Then with a car wax polish again.

Very possibly. SWMBO's uncle was a lighterman on the Thames out of Charlton. He died mind in suspicious circumstances on the river just after WW2!

I have a couple of heavily rusty gate hangers that had went through my electrolysis tank. It had removed the rust but the remaining black oxide was well stuck on, it normally comes off easily. I think this was because the anode is heavily caked in crud & needs cleaned.

Feeling lazy I dropped them into my citric acid tank. Two hours later I fished them out & the acid had removed the oxide & nicely etched the surface ready for paint!

Does anyone know whether citric acid will damage case hardening*? I've got a few wheel bearings that have been stored badly (before I got them) and have bits of rust on them that I'd like to remove, and this seems an easy way. I'm concerned that if I use some mechanical method I might cause more problems than I solve.

(* or whatever process is used to harden roller bearings)

Didn't harm the last set I cleaned up with Citric acid, just turned them black.

Imho if you leave it in there too long then it will. It knackered the edges on my jack plane blades. Started off ok:

...but then I let it go rusty so stuck it all back in again...

They've both thinned down and narrowed at what I guess is the high carbon content end:

Just do it the once and keep a close eye.

Many suppliers of chemicals will no longer supply to residential addresses, and the ones that do tend to be on eBay. There are usually three grades on offer; Technical, food and pharmaceutical, which reflect increasing purity and increasing price generally. Anything will do for de-rusting. I think most of what's on ebay will say something like 99% purity.
