Buy some cotton microfibres or silica fume from any local fibreglassing place, add, stir, viola, thixotropic gel.

Is fumed silica available from glassfibre dudes? That stuff is fantastic for making gel; as a starting point, if you mix one volume of liquid with one volume of silica that should be somewhere close. Alternatively, add the silica at a level of 4-5% by weight may work. The makers of that stuff claim that it is safe, but I'd certainly want the best breathing mask I could find and lots of ventilation.

I told the wife that I have a serious allergy to wallpaper paste many years ago, but I'll wait to hear how it works if someone else wants to try it .

I looked on ebay and found some sellers of fumed silica. I've just ordered 250g (£9.50); I think it's possible that might gel at least 3 litres, maybe 5 litres; don't know how the presence of citric in the solution might affect it. Of course, the silica is cheaper in larger quantities, but this is just for starters.

Does a good job, seal the holes with rubber bungs.
Add the mix and leave.

I have joined the club, would like to try it out on a few small items like squares and tools, bought a gurt bag of the stuff . I was wondering about dilution rates and whether to bother with hot water, please don’t point me at a hugetube vid, just need to know app dilution rates and whether best hot or hold

Same one that I bought.
Heat always speeds chemical reactions. So far, I've used half a cup per kettle of hot water.
Will try and saturate it next, so no more will dissolve, which may entail a full cup...

I just put enough water in the container to cover the parts then drop some CA into it. have an old sweetie tin I use as a scoop and just add what i think is the right amount for the water.

I put some old crusty/rusty track rods from the x-trail rear suspension in and they cleaned right up. that wad about 20 litres of water and 5 scoops.

If the reaction is not going quick enough I just add some more CA. I had an old die holder that was a bit crusty and dropped that it. No its probably to do with the metal but that was quite slow and i added a fair bit. i dropped a rusty drill bit in and that fizzed away, whereas the die holder did not.

Remember though that you really want to take off the rust, but not too much metal, so using a saturated solution might be a bit aggressive depending on the job. After I've looked the gelling issue, the next item would be to find corrosion inhibitors to restrict its attack to the rust.
According to Hermes, the silica for the gel will be here by 3pm TODAY .

Don't leave the mix in the chip pan, it might dissolve the basket & eat holes in the element - mine did!

This one has the element under the stainless bowl so its indirectly heated, I was hoping the basket was stainless too. Cant be sure until it lands but if its not a stainless basket I will make one

if it was anything like mine, it'll be the cheapest / thinnest wire, chrome plated shiite known to man..... mine is in the best place for it, the skip... only wanted the element anyway....
you'res looks more industrial so here's hoping it's stainless...

The tank on mine was stainless but everything else was plated. It was first stripped back to copper then the acid dissolved the thin steel underneath!

Looks good. I wonder if the stainless grade is important in it's resistance to citric...guessing probably.

Bung them in all in one go.
Try to stand them up, so the cutting end is uppermost.
