All those D shackles were seized solid. Put them in the vice, end of the bolt pointing up, heated up with the MAPP gas and dabbed a candle over the rusted end of the bolt.
The metal expands, the wax runs down the threads making it easier to undo but still with a bit if help from the BFH.

I tried some citric acid at a higher temperature today, and was impressed by the results. Usually all I do is warm the water a little to allow the powder to dissolve more easily, but this time because of the various posts here I let it boil, stirred the powder in and dropped the items in, and and hour or so later they were clean, and probably less time than that but I left them to percolate. I will have to have a look for some means of keeping it heated in future.

I use an old element fitted to the side of a welded up ali box. Made years ago for an ill fated (it didn't work) PCB plating tank.
Can't remember where the element was even from. The clyinder stat works a treat keeping it all at 70degC.
Ideally for citric acid derusting, the tank needs more depth and the element more physical protection.
Debating whether to build this into the bottom of a stainless steel sink and fold up a stand-off tray that'd sit in the bottom of the sink but bridge over the element.

Thanks for the idea. Skip next door had some nice baskets in (and as he's a central heating engineer, probably all the other bits needed) but it was emptied the other day. I'll keep my eyes peeled. I've got fish tank heaters for my plating kit, but I don't think they go quite high enough. I wonder what would happen to the kettle* if I just poured my now-cold solution into it, heated it back up again, and returned it to the jar.

Citric acid isn't the magic panacea for all rusty ills!
The heavy lumps of rust you need to knock off with a chisel, old screwdriver or wire brush etc. For lifting some of the layers a Stanley knife even.
Oh and degrease parts first, the citric won't strip the grease (or paint).
Just derusted the ends of SWMBO's 206 arb. That and some of the shackle bits getting a coat of etch primer now.
Did I mention I need a workshop? All this fair weather only working is getting on my t!ts.
In my future I see a workspace with >insert any old, free item of machinery or tool here< going in one end, getting stripped, derusted in a bespoke tank(s), painted...

I'm really asking for a miracle from citric acid now...
So my daily is a 2011 Mondeo estate. One rear bulb stopped working in the tailgate cluster. Turns out the 4-pole connectors, o/s and n/s are corroded. If only they'd been sprayed with contact cleaner or silicone grease!
Battery disconnected and connectors in little pots of 4:1 citric acid and hot water...

The light cluster. This after a half hour dip. It's gotten rid of all the peripheral corrosion crap round where the bulbs fit. The problem is the 4 connections under that central blob of melted on plastic:

Citric cleaned up the 4 pins in the o/s cluster holder (the black things). One is a bit fragile...
However the n/s is knackered. I had to butcher the plastic just to get it apart. The broken off, corroded pins, what's left of them are still stuck in the plug that's derusting.
No ideas how I'm going to repair this!

Just an observation...
Citric acid is "sticky" isn't it, on your fingers, over the bench, on whatever it is you're derusting. I was wondering if my wooden bench top becomes "sticky" and "sweet", whether it will make it more attractive to insects?
Also...could it be used, made into a damp paste to polish up say rust stained stainless steel? A bit like Barkeepers Friend?

That's weird...
I made up a strong citric acid solution and set it heating at 70degC. Chucked in a handful of very rusty fixings. Meant to drain it off later that day...but didn't. Turned off the tank and walked away.
2 weeks later and the solution is a very milky green. The fixings have a white, chalk like substance on them. It comes off but it's quite hard.
I've drained the tank and it looks like this.
Rinsing the parts doesn't get the white off so I guess it's a wire brush on each part then back into a fresh batch.
I'd love to know what's going on chemically, some some reaction with the aluminium tank?

Interesting. Nobody afaic tell has mentioned not to use ali in this thread yet? I was only going on the Deox-C instructions that said it's OK. Would explain the sticky black issues I've had then?
I mixed up a fresh batch of citric and boiled it up again. Most of the white stuff has gone! My thoughts are the white residue is citric acid?
A few stubborn one's mind:
