Thanks. I'm getting better. No cock ups on this one.

In all honesty I never close it unless I'm in back gear and it throws oil around off the helicals.
Probably should but it stops me putting stuff on top of it.

Day off today.hopefully get the boring finished and start drilling and tapping holes.

No need to take the step out. Plenty of clearance.

And test fit.

13 holes to drill 6 tapped for dog points to secure the tube.
Was going to mill a slot for access but as I can strip it down into it's components easily I won't yet unless needed.
I will mill the stepper side square though once holes are drilled.

Not too bad for a chippie.
Would do it differently next time though.

Spot my cock up. I spoke too soon.

Cap heads on order to replace these.

Sods law I snap the only m5x0.8 tap I have.
Was a cheapo. Replacements on route too.
Il build it up for a test later.

They've been In the garage for years.
Used one to clean a few threads and never touched it again.

Plenty of big taps. Not so much metric and small here. Keep meaning to rectify but there's always something else to buy.

How are you going to remove the broken piece, or will you not bother?

You can use a solution of alum to dissolve it, but it's fairly slow I believe.

The advantage of it being a cheap tap. It twisted and bent 5mm above the surface.
Probably wouldn't have happened if I hadn't changed to a bigger wrench.

Gripped it in the vice and turned the part.

The m4 I tapped with a quality tap were perfect (other than my positioning of the first hole) the m5 was chocolate but I wanted to tap the holes to fix the stepper.
My own fault for chancing it.

Still need to finish tapping the motor mounts and mill the motor end square.
Close to complete now.

Fixings turned up so swapped them out.

Had a good tidy up then thought about how I was going to mill the end.
Easiest option was to use the rapid indexer.

Turned the original mandrel I made down to suit the only collet I have for it and ready to go.
Clamped it down before I realised it was set to 16ths. Adjusted from the underside.
Has a big 24 toothed cog and can move it from 1 to 6 teeth per handle pull.

All ready to go just needs to be clocked up.
Tomorrow if I'm home early enough.

Ready for inspection.
May have forgotten to tighten the head to the column. Checked the collet and the indexer. Finally twigged why I was drifting.
Il call that finished.
Look closely and you can see where the cutter pulled in
