Colchester used roll pins as locator pins. The only thing is they're a pain to get out. I prefer the threaded counterbored pins, harder to make but can be both pushed and pulled far more easily when coated in dried oil.

And headstock damage well, hate to say it but did you not drain the headstock when pre-purchase inspecting? I would tidy it up and sell it, they're common enough, and generally mishandling like that points to more clumsy use imo.

I get what your saying. ..but am kind of to far in it to give up and sell it...a broken gear can be replaced and I can fix the porous case leak...it's time consuming and an added expense but don't have a great deal of choice.

Yes they do come up for sale for spares.. but I will get it sorted..

Belzona should fix the pours casing, that machine looks like its been used by many of its model name!

Will start stripping it down this week.. it's strange why it's porous as the casting is thick...

Was trying to remember the name of that. Used it to rebuild the seat for a blade for a scrap guillotine that had had many people attempting repairs on it. Think it lasted well and it must have got some serious abuse as this thing could chop through serious bits of steel.

That a boy spenc. Good on you. Your dead right you've come too far and put in too much time and effort getting her to where she is now to throw in the towel over a shafted gear. I'm sure you'll find the parts you need and the build will continue.

To right Richard. ..it was hard work getting it in the workplace and all the hassle of transport. I definitely will persevere and fix.

I would not use Belzona or Devcon here unless the instructions say they will stick to oil-contaminated or impregnated surfaces. Something like Hylomar blue might be better.

As for the headstock gear, is there room to shrink-fit a thin band over the damaged bit to hold it together? The teeth look OK, especially if you use a diamond file to smooth out the nasty bits.

The gear I will replace. They are expensive but I don't want that broken one in there. I haven't done research on the best stuff to use.

No it's not cracked. It pourous on a small part of the casing .

Just wondering about the porosity. It must have been there from the start so must have leaked from the start. My Mk1.5 always seeped oil from some levers but it was tiny and oil level never really dropped over years between changes but yours may be worse.
It looks like the casting is reasonable for quite a bit from the face inwards so I was thinking it may be possible to groove the lever and fit an O Ring.

Regarding Devcon, it should be fine with oil, have used it on shafts that were submerged in oil after refitting.

Another vote for Devcon here. An old trucker friend of a friend used to drive an ancient DAF2800 that had a porous block or a porous liner or something (don't remember exactly), but he 'fixed it' with Devcon, and it lasted years and years.

'Slightly' off topic, but last I heard, he was driving it over the Alps or the Pyrenees or somewhere with it when he felt a steering wobble. When he got out to check his tyres, one suddenly blew out and knocked him clean out cold, damaging an eye. As far as I know that was the end of his truck driving.

Anyhow - Devcon would be what I'd try first!

I think the clutch/brake lever on my lathe has a dribble of oil under it, it's never been a problem.
