Iv just paid 339.00 pounds inc up front exam fees for my collage course so the Portamig funds are at a all time low but I think worth it in the long run the Mig will have to wait at least I will have some idea how to use it when I get it LOL.

Im on the City & Guilds 3267They say the student can choose any two of the following five options: MMA(01); MIG(02); GAS(03); TIG(A) Aluminium(04) or TIG(S/S) Stainless Steel(05). Although this course is a practical one, tuition is given in welding and testing methods (BS 4872) in the form of demonstrations and short lectures. But it has been made clear you can pass any many as you can get though in 12 months so with a bit of luck can get all five passes in my time there.

If you have 12 months you will get them all. I passed my level one on the fifth evening. My sons, who had both done the Arc course, did all of the MIG 1 tests in one evening, the first. If you want to do the easy bit first, go from MIG to ARC.

Hi Cobminor Im halfway though the mig exam papers on week 3 so i'll keep my fingers crossed the TIG looks hard to master though

Tig is easy as long as you can keep the dam tungsten out of the weld pool

Merthyr Collage run a very comprehensive course which lasts 12 months level 1, second year for level 2 and so on. You can choose 3 of the 4 (Mig, Tig, Arc and gas) They aslo show you how cut with gas and plasma but its not part of the course.

Best of all, if you live in Merthyr its free (just like the prescriptions)

Exeter College are running a 'General Welding' evening class course. This starts on Monday 22nd or Tuesday 23rd September (you can choose which suits you), and runs for 10 weeks - 2 hours per evening from 7.00pm till 9.00pm. Cost is £108.00 (please check this as the chap I spoke to was less than confident).
The format seems to be that you tell the tutor what you want to learn ie TIG, MIG, MMA, and he will set you going and give guidance as required.
They are also running the same course on Wednesdays starting on 24th, but this is for more advanced work such as pipework etc.

This is not a certificated course.

Great Yarmouth College of FE

I'm starting C&G 3267 on Tuesday evening this coming week - two hours each Tuesday evening. The course runs through to 1st July 2009
Cost was £185 but, because I paid up front, it was discounted to £165 I'm hoping it'll be practical - the theory is always something that you can read up at home, or on the forum, but there's no subtitute for hands-on experience.
I did a course at the College about eight years ago. Basically hobby welding with no assessment or anything like it at the end. We covered a bit of TIG and MIG but it was mainly gas and electric arc. Good fun though, and I'm hoping this couse will be as good.
This is my first post on the forum. I've kept a watching brief for some time though and find the topics discussed very interesting and the whole atmosphere seems very friendly and down to earth.

Cost £150 when I started it in Sept. 2008, can't remember how long it runs for and can't find this info on their website (might be 17 wks, but I'm not sure about this).

There are at least 8 courses on Welding and another 4 which are welding-associated (like metal working intros). P/T and FT. There might be a single day course too, not sure.

There is a strong Motorsport and Engineering background to this college.

Runs the C&G 3267 courses, you can do as much as you can fit in the time. I'm currently nearing the end of mine, have done level 1 and 2 MIG so far and am going to give level 1 TIG a crack if I can fit it in
