Compressor recommendations?

Unless you go up another price level a lot of these will just be re-badged from the far east I would say. If something goes wrong then hopefully the warranty is better. But my second Wolf was damaged in transit, refused delivery and a new one was sent as soon as the other arrived back and no issues at all.

My previous two direct drives were a Clarke top of the range and Aldi, the Clarke always had a little oil in the tank and the Aldi nothing. Both ran fine until I sold them.

They're all generic enough that if the pump or motor goes you just replace them.

When you say up a price level... What do you think we are talking money wise?
I'm waiting to hear back from this lot on a quote... But they look very different from the compressors I've posted already.

For example a few weeks back I also got this 200L SIP compressor like brand new for £320



Very good compressor but as others said alot of this stuff is made in Italy or China anyway and all looks the same apart from the colour and branding.

The quality control is probably tighter on better brands but I wouldn't go buying a Snap On is what I'm saying.

This compressor is very good but when using an air file / sander the other day I noted it was running constant for about 5 mins. Keeping up but some air tools will still give it a work out.

Again as I said before when it comes to compressors buy the biggest tank and output to suit yout budget.

I'm not the right guy when it comes to quality European compressors. I've got the space for multiple compressors so that has always been my go to. Mutiple 3hp 14 or 14.5cfm. The good thing about the cheaper generic types are parts are going to be cheap if they break or wear out. If you are going to be running the compressor every day and need to rely on it for your business then go for a expensive one but if it's weekend warrior stuff like most of us then I don't see the need for anything expensive.

I'm in Aberdeen so not much comes up for sale second hand.

Using air tools you want pressure, the bigger the tank volume the more the compressor is going to have to work to keep the pressure up. A big tank is good for spraying, more surface area drops more water out but spraying you only need 2bar so need to work the compressor hard to get a high pressure as that just heats the air and wears the compressor.

The bigger the air compressor receiver the better really. On my 200L SIP you can run air tools for about a minute before it even needs to kick in the motor.

But then it's working hard to keep the bigger volume at pressure. Something like a sander the bigger volume is no point. Something under a minute is the only advantage for air tools.

I dont quite follow your line of thinking. As I said my advice is get as big a compressor as possible. 200L - 270L etc. Its having the reserve of air on tap that is important. But won't argue with you on this no time for that so people can decide what they want.

This thread is for advice for someone buying a compressor. If you want a operating pressure of 8bar for continuous use of a air tool, the bigger the volume of the tank the more air the compressor needs to pump to get back up to the pressure with a bigger tank. It's quicker for a compressor to fill a smaller tank especially like your example if the compressor is running continuously then it's dropped below the switch pressure and will need to pump more air to get back up to pressure.

I have ABAC PRO A39B 200 FM3.

Perfectly acceptable for spraying while using airfed mask. Sprayed 100s of items.
Make sure you are using a 3 stage filter rated for breathable air if you are using this type of compressor and intend to use air fed mask.

Have also sandblasted with the compressor and works fine. It is not enough CFM for vapour blasting, I now have another similar sized compressor running in parallel which I use for more CFM when vapour blasting.

Nice compressor, got any pics of your setup? What spray gun and airfed mask are you using?

I use devilbiss flg-5 for mostly everything ranging from 30-40 psi

Must be enough air as the regulator has a whistle on it that blows if not enough air for mask, only had that once when I forgot to turn the compressor on once!

Pics below of the two compressors and mask. I run auto drain valves on both compressors which drain through hoses under the garage doors and outside.

Excuse the exposed wiring on the abac, have been tinkering with the pressure switch as seemed to back off from vibration and the two compressors started up at same time causing the current surge and tripping breaker. Before I had them start with a few seconds delay of eachother which took some fiddling but they've seemed to drift towards eachothers start times.

Nice, that would be very much at the limit for a FLG5 and mask going full out. Good that it's managing. Do you do any big jobs.

A smaller main tank with a additional tank is a good compromise. The second tank works great for dropping out moisture. A few guys on here have a second tank and you can put it anywhere you like. I converted a big propane bottle for spraying and works great at dropping moisture out.

Piston Displacement:	13.00CFM (368ltr/min)
Free Air Delivery (FAD):	8.50CFM (240ltr/min)

3HP single phase.

Yes, the tools use is in FAD, not pressure (although they do need the pressure at the tool inlet). The compressor will restart well above the 5, or 6, Bar required for operation of most air tools, so the larger tank is simply a buffer before the pump kicks in again. Tool FAD will determine whether the receiver pressure continues to reduce or steadily gets refilled to cut-out pressure. That chinese (or Italian) rating of 13CFM - meaning only real, actual, truthful production of 8.5CFM says it all really.

That compressor will service tools continuously only if they consume less than 8 1/2 CFM. Typical hype for those that don’t know - bumping up the real output by an advertised 50% more than the truth!

I think for most home users those specs are still very decent. But notwithstanding this I have also just purchased a used Tandem compressor with these specs (Current model but it should be very similar if not identical)

Upright compressors are nice if you are short of space. If you aren't, you soon will be if you spend any time on here.

And.... I've got a tree stump with a bowl carved out and a baseball bat that has been bastardised into a large wooden shrinking mallet.
