I upgraded mine with a big tree tech board it's very quiet.

Probably can do self leveling too just haven't got round tuit

All you need is a probe like a bl touch and connect it to the board and add it in the setup if you are using marlin.

I have a touch probe in a box somewhere and recompiling Marlin is no bother I just haven't got round tuit. The silent board was gathering dust for a year too

I have a probe to fit but keep stalling as I will need to read up on recompiling marlin as I did not do the compiling last time.
It was done when I had it.

I think I had to use a small connector board but I can't locate that either. Lol

I have used my ender 3 to the point it is realistically needs rebuild.
New build plate and extruder etc.

So probably worth next to nowt.

But have been looking at the bambu lab p1s/p1p instead, but if the k1 is that cheap might have to do some research

Not the best time of year but I have been hearing great things about the bamboo printers but only the small one is anywhere near my budget unless I sell something.

I guess the K1 is more affordable but probably has a bed size closer to the ender 2 I am guessing.

If getting an ender printer, I would recommend going for a version that has the direct drive extruder. It's only a matter of time before you end up replacing them for a full metal hotend anyway.
You can upgrade them with microswiss or e3d but that works out more expensive.

As someone who has been 3D curious but thinking it is all too experimental and that I would dip my toe in to the water when things have become more mainstream, I am now thinking the time has come. So question to the experienced: If I were to buy the k1 in the first link, realistically what else would I need to be able to design simple items and print them out?
Obviously one of the free 3D cad packages, is FreeCad still well regarded and how much processing power will I need? My 'hack' i3 laptop will run Photoshop CS6 but not CS2024 et al due to the ancient graphics card, will I need to use my MacBook or can I expect to use the laptop?
What filament to get, just PLA or are there more user friendly filaments at slightly higher price?

Hum, if in ten days I have not made a decision I obviously don't need or want a 3D printer...

I recommend onshape for designing parts. It's online and free, full featured too. If you can run a Web browser you can run it.
Only catch is the free version puts your designs in the public domain.

Start off with PLA, when you need a functional part look at PETG.
Both about £20 a 1kg roll.

The older enders are cheap but have known limitations.
You can't print above 245 degrees because it's not got a full metal hotend.
You can't really print soft plastics like TPU as its a Bowden design.

That's why I recommend going for one of the newer higher spec models. They are soo cheap now.

I bought mine direct - great service and no added taxes etc.

A lot of kit for less than £400. To give you an idea of size it will do a star wars helmet about 2 to 3x life size. Think of a traffic cone or breeze block. combined with very good quality. Haven't had a print fail yet.

That does look the business, it also looks like a cat toy or at least they would think it is a cat toy, they have to be restrained from my A3 Epson which is ok for the couple of minutes but keeping them out of the office for hours would not work. Someone would leave the door open and I would get the blame for burned paws and a destroyed print, which is why the K1 in its own cabinet looks tempting, yes I could build an enclosure but I don't want to.

In essence yes. The newer printers seem to be quicker and more precise.
But if you know what you are doing you can still get good prints from them.
Newer ones seem to be working out of the box but you are still limited to how well you can design unless you want stuff on thingiverse etc.

I have never has a non bowden printer and until TPU and other flexible filament came available most people would go the other way to a Bowden as it could print better and quicker in the frames supplied.

The budget ones work well for the tasks that they are designed for. Many people are entirely satisfied with them as they are. However for some of us, it opens up a world of possibilities which go beyond the designed capabilities. Then you have two choices, upgrade to a more comprehensive machine or put "go faster" stripes onto a budget machine, which is the route I took as I could afford it.

My machine has Twin Z, MicroSwiss and BLTouch upgrades as well as an enclosure. I also have a camera in there. The printer does everything I ask of it, but now I fancy a larger build area so I may sell mine if I can find the upgrade money.

Just learnt Creality make a 40W laser cutter which is also in this sale. I've been thinking about the xTool version for a while now but the creality one seems a little more refined.

Yep, got an x1-carbon at work and is amazing bit of kit. Hence wanting one! But if the k1 was 80% as good at ⅓ of the cost then would possibly sway me.

(Bambu lab is only a 256x256x256 build deck also, and my ender 3 at present is only a 220x220x200 and never gotten close to maxing them out)
