CV joint stuck!!

I'm changing the OSF cv joint of swimbos 2015 Mazda 2.

Had a problem undoing the axle nut but managed with a 6 foot pipe and a LOT of pressure to undo it. Finally got the cv joint pushed out of the hub and then... can';t get it off the driveshaft. Spent over an hour trying just about everything but it will not budge. I'm assuming that the circlip is jammed somehow cos I have hit it VERY hard but it won't budge. The only idea I have is to take the whole axle out and get it in the vice and maybe have more luck but car is on a jack and it's an automatic gearbox. Will I be OK just pulling the whole shaft out or will I need some sort of tool to lever it out of the box? Also will I lose transmission fluid in the process? Or does anyone have a better idea to get this darned CV off ?

A CV joint puller tool can be very handy for doing these in situ and can save you having to remove the driveshaft

A pry bar is the way to usually get them out of the box, they can be stubborn and you have to be careful not to damage the box and the seal. Often recommended to change the seal at the same time if you do remove it.
Yes you will lose some fluid unless you jack the car up on the side you are removing to minimise the loss.

That puller looks great I wonder if I could make something as bank holiday it's gonna take a while to arrive. I've got loads of bits but, of course, I just sold my one and only welder!! I'll see what I can do unless anyone local can loan me one??

Found an old gear puller but don't think it will work...might be able to make something that pushes from the back ......where there's a will ..... there's relatives !!

Yes they use the axle nut, I think mine is made by ASTA - although they are probably all from the same Chinese factory.
I would not say they are the most durable tool, I've seen them fold up before, and they like to slip down the drive shaft, especially when everything is covered in grease - so its not a panacea. But it is also not expensive either.

In a tight situation, they can really save the day. I got a call out to a mate of mine who was stuck trying to get one off, took a couple of goes but it popped it off in the end.
Sometimes it can be assisted by winding up the tension and then using a long punch to whack on the back of the spider to shock it of the clip.

The way I have done them in the past without removing the shaft is just by hammering on the back of them with a drift, but that is a lot of effort and luck and difficult to get around all the suspension.
Otherwise it is pop the shaft and get it in the vice where you can give it a proper belt.

bfh. seriously, smack it. hard. wont fail you. there's a little spring clip in there that you have to overcome. if you think you're hitting it hard enough, you're not.

I spent ages trying to remove an inner driveshaft joint on my 911 a while back, tried everything, it bent the puller, eventually resorted to the angle grinder to split it, that made short work of it quite quickly.

Vw had some where the c clip jammed up so could not get the outer joint off the shaft.

Ended up cutting both sides and splitting the outer cup in half.

Using them as a slide hammer against the jaws of a decent vice normally pops them off.

Regarding the oil - I changed the driveshaft on a Peugeot 106, before I started I made a point of jacking the "problem" side of the car up as far as possible using a 2T jack. It lost no oil at all

Would using the two hammer method work better? ie belt both sides of the CV at the same time 180° apart so it doesn't twist and jam on the circlip.

I did try with a disc cutter but no good not enough room to work ... if the puller doesn't work I'll try another plan but had enough today...I'll enjoy the weekend... thanks everyone for your ideas I'll beat it in the end

This ^ Vauxhalls too, spent a while with a bfh until I realised the inner part of the CV had a recess for the circlip... Idiot
Mazd/Ford - there was a lot of cross fertilisation there at one point, even Volvos got sh**ed.
