CV joint stuck!!

Just did boot on dons 2005 astra. I used split boot last year ( my tester laughed and said do it properly!) So leaking again this year.

Got one of the pullers, checked in back of cv after clearing grease. No sign of external clip do attached tool and it came off with few turns on hub nut.
Pushed back on with tap from hammer to make sure. I'd ordered a fitting cone for tomorrow from Amazon as I had to sort for Tuesday.
That'll go into stock for another time

There's a groove cut arround the splinned shaft section with a plain wire " C" clip in. I think the chamfer on the inside splines on the joint push it into the groove enough for the joint to slide on until it springs " open " into the outer groove then it blocks both splines.
I guess in normal use there's not much force pulling in line with the shaft to " pop" it off.
Certainly with the puller I used impact gun setting one and slow on trigger and it moved very easily.
Hot sure that the circlip looking one in earlier post would be easy without shaft on bench especially without a lift!

Would using the two hammer method work better? ie belt both sides of the CV at the same time 180° apart so it doesn't twist and jam on the circlip.

I normally put driveshaft in pipe vice - then put a bit of pipe over CV joint hub splines and then thump CV joint with 4lb lump hammer.

Bit of pipe - keeps joint in CV joint in right orientation you need.

Got the tool late yesterday but was lashing rain outside .. I'm off to anglesey for a couple of days break so will be Friday before I can attempt the ##@^&! Cv again but feeling positive

I refurbed my Golf driveshafts off the car and those internal spring clips were a real pain.

Had to support the end while using a hefty mallet to pop them apart.

Had a battle removing them from the Kuga and GTO as well.

Bring back the old Vauxhall Astra and Cavalier, got CV boot replacement down to less than 5 minutes without even taking the wheel off and using original type boots!

My mate used to do a lot of Cavalier clutches I believe you could do it with the geabox still bolted to the engine?.

Yes also vauxhall nova and early corsa/astra , brilliant idea I've done a few in the past, half an hour job done.

Dead easy job until you get a customer ask for a price to do it and he says he won’t pay a penny more , you then find the shaft that should come out easily will not shift even breaking my Sykes Pickavant tool so you end up pulling the box back to do the job. On collecting the car he told me the last time the clutch was done they had the same problem

Other than standard service work we won't give a specific quote for jobs. Even then brake pads etc are extra if required.

We tell the customers we charge as long as it on the bench (maybe give a rough idea barring any problems).

Most people are more than happy with that approach and the ones that aren't would normally be the ones that turn the screw and try and avoid paying for extra work required.

Shame you got stung with that one!.

Don't let the customer tell you what you should charge.
If they aren't happy with the quote tell them to go elsewhere.

Plot twist, it's attached to a van with a table in it!

I would have stuck at it first time and used up some slitting discs and cut the old joint apart. Then ordered the tool and had it for next time around

The guy in question wasn’t short of a Bob or two , he was a Don at Trinity College in Cambridge , no, it wasn’t Newton! I had several customers at the college that I didn’t want to upset. He was a customer for several years afterwards , he may have ended up paying me double what I would have charged for the original job , £10 here, a fiver there etc . It was one of his fellow dons that suggested that approach

Waiting for my tool batteries to recharge... and me ... I'll start again after lunch ... I have never known anything to be this difficult to remove

Why, is the removal tool the incorrect size or slipping off? (I would consider a tack weld or adding vice grips if its the latter)

If you have the new part, then study it and make marks on the old joint where you could best break it apart.

Eg, measure the depth of the shaft recess, then cut around that line on the old one sort of thing. Always avoiding cutting the actual shaft but all else is game on the old joint!

How much is a new shaft versus the outer cv joint? Last night I fitted a complete new shaft on my landcruiser to save all the messing changing the inner cv boot. The shaft was £52 delivered versus £30 for the cv
