CV joint stuck!!

Ok ... it's off!!!! Just to answer first. It's an automatic.
I ordered the complete assembly for £80 off Ebay.. didn't fit only place I could get another was from mazda no change from £800 ... no thanks! Outer cv is same as manual £48 delivered.
I managed to cut the inner race and remove the balls .. with a lot of hammering and swearing I got the joint off but it left the spider on the shaft. ... tried everything to get it off but ended up cutting in half and using a hammer to remove it!!!!

Should be easy now to fit new cv and get everything back together .. I'll post some pics later

Not an ‘I told you so’, more for future reference when I have to do it - would you say it might have been better to pull the shaft out and do it on the bench?

It gets worse... just got it all back together put in gear and got a horrendous noise ... sounds like the inner joint may be out somehow but I'm too knackered to get it jacked up to have a look... Will try tomorrow

Could be the outer joint not far enough on, been there before,

OK ..after a nights rest I'm ready to go ... I used my impact wrench for the CV hub nut ...I think that was a mistake. I'm going to loosen the nut and use a torque wrench but not sure of the figure to use. It's a 2015 Mazda 2 1.5 and I've found one post that say torque to 120 then loosen and turn 180 and then torque to 180 ...anyone think this is correct??

If you don't have a workshop manual or a haynes, the other thing you could try is asking over on a Mazda forum, somebody is bound to have access to a workshop manual.

Volvos have a precise torque procedure with angular torque but they use stretch bolts...I doubt it matters too much on a nut but guess it's worth checking.

I would have thought it's something at the other end...like the drive shaft becoming disengaged (I had that once!)...typical as one end won't come out and the other end just drops out!

Don't see why using an impact gun would be an issue. Normally cv joint nuts are FT. Some are held by bolts into them, different deal altogether.

The torque is fairly important as it preloads the wheel bearing correctly - otherwise they can wear prematurely.

I know it is obvious, but the noise wasn't the brake dust shield hitting the disc?
They often get bent out of shape when doing work on the suspension and they can make a hell of a racket.

Ok..I am back where I started stripped it all down again and the fault (is me!!) is the CV joint has not gone in far enough to pass the circlip and the joint is just spinning around... So two hours later I can't get the joint to go in and I can't get the joint to come off...even with the new puller !! So I think I need to get the help of a mobile mechanic who should have a lot more experience than me .... swimbo says that's what I should have done in the first place!! (and she's right).

I did know of a trustworthy guy many years ago so I'll see if he's still working....

First mistake is listening to her indoors

We've all been there and don't beat yourself up. That's how I learned to work on cars as a teenager. Trials and tribulations. Many times sitting wondering WHY do I work at cars! But eventually you get good at tackling problems and sheared bolts etc only by having seat time doing it yourself.

PS for anyone wondering that CV tool is GREAT value at £10ish posted. Very well made I am impressed

If its any consolation I have a mazda story about removing front hub bearings, got the front hub off ok and CV out of hub but could not remove the bearings, after trying everything I knew took it to my local auto engineering company, Park Engineering in Malton (Excellent people!!), who tried a 70 ton press, and then a 100 ton press, and then masses of heat and eventually admitted defeat and actually bending the hub! They reckoned the bearings had been fitted by the factory using a hydraulic press so big and so fast it had friction welded the outers into the hub! With CV joints usually you can push the joint a little further onto the shaft and then pull it back untill it touches the circlip, if you did not have this movement I would suggest the same thing has happened!

If it won't come off, well, it was in!
You did get the correct joint - spline wise did you?

Did you replace the circlip? It sounds like it has been dislodged and bound everything up. I have seen issues before where the groove wasn't machined properly and caused the circlip to get trapped, but if you have replaced the joint it should have gone on fairly easily.

how far did you drive it without the cv being fitted right? Chances are you have destroyed the splines on the end of the shaft hence why it won't fit properly or come off.

You've got me wondering certainly the outside spline is the same .... yes new circlip supplied and fitted. The joint is just spinning around the driveshaft so I'm assuming it's not in far enough but it won't come off either... tbh I'm up the wall with it ... think I need an expert to look at it there aren't many jobs I haven't done on cars over the last 55 years !!! But I'm certainly struggling today

I might have to have a drink, sleep on it but I always go back for more

I have two cars at the moment with problems.
Fiat 500 = gearshift.
Toyota Aygo= airbag light.
Plus the poxy shower pump upstairs is causing me great anger.
