Last troublesome one I did I used 2 pry bars to balance the pull...also rotated the shaft and gave it a couple of gentle taps to allow the clip to goggle about and find its groove before having another go. Still took a few attempts!

Nothing to lose but getting a rag to wipe the grease off and have a close look before heating anything up...

You’ll find it easier, ‘first as last’, to drain the box and pull the driveshaft out, and do it on the bench/vice.

Car is on a jack with wheel and axle off no way I can get under to drain the box .. I'm waiting for the puller to arrive with crossed fingers

Have you looked for the circlip yet? I'm yet to see a modern car that doesn't use a circlip to hold the outer CV in place.

I have one of the pullers pic'd, I bought it after a never again real pig of one to get off on the mrs's clio to replace a boot because stupidly I bought the oem style boot that wouldnt expand, and I ended up taking the thing off and setting it up in the press. When it came out the circlip was a right shape, and of course the new joint didnt come with a replacement circlip and nobody would supply me with a clip
I was so sick of it by this point I just bought a whole recon shaft and put it in.
I havent used the tool in anger yet, but it was so cheap I figured it was good insurance to avoid the pain encountered above which probably was caused by my adhoc removal attempts not pulling the joint off squarely.

Yeah on the shaft I did, the clip was inside the joint and not visible until disassembled.

Yes I have the new cv and a new clip... it fits inside hidden away from mere mortals like us lot ((

Another thing you can do to get the shaft off so you can work with it on a bench is split the inner CV. Remove the big clip and peel back the gaiter, the inner part of the CV will simply slide out of the housing, which will stay in the gearbox. Ideally you would want to mark the two parts so you can refit it in the same position, it has 3 lobes which will all have different wear patterns so best to match them back up again. Inner CV looks like this:

he means spring clip, not circlip. (outer joint is different to the inner shown above) it collapses into its grove when the cv is forced over the top of it.

Spring clip is usually on the end of the driveshaft in a retaining groove, the CV joint compresses it as passes over it and it then pops back out to lock the joint on. To remove the joint you have to force the clip closed by pushing the joint back off over it. It doesn't have to compress by much but it can take a fair bit of force, and of course it's awkward to do in situ.

Snap ring (wire ring), on the inside, driven into its slot by the taper on the inside of the centre of the cv (when you whack the cv "off".
Circlip, as widely known, needs to be lifted out of its slot with a circlip pliers - must obviously be on the outside of the centre of the cv. Usually covered in black grease and hiding in there. Hammer all you like, the cv wont come off.

Another thought here. If you have a new joint to take measurements from and good drillbits you could carefully drill into the centre of the old CV joint. Tap it and use a bolt to pull the old joint. Like this video method:

If you don't have bolts long enough you could put any sort of spacer in there to push against when drilled out.

This method would exert force exactly where you need it which is between the joint and shaft. But it will be important to measure and monitor drill depth carefully to avoid damage.
