Why wouldn’t a French drain make a difference?, I’ve had it work for me in the past on another old house I lived in. Surely gravel up against his wall as opposed to topsoil can only reduce the problem.

Too much talk about “legal” issues, just talk to the neighbour, the problem could be resolved for less than the cost of a couple of lawyers letters even if the OP has to pay for the resolution.

a french drain on your land would be exceptable but in this case the french drain is on someone else land and so is the run off

whilst the op could use injection damp coarse on his own building and have access to this as well as have access to repoint the building he has no right of access onto next doors property or to dig the driveway up and install a french drain

just as much as next door has no right to drill the external boundary wall so he can fit a gate post to it

Ours is late 1800s and they were using slate, with air bricks ventilating the celler. Works surprisingly well.

Back to the plot... @Damper, have you established where the actual boundary is? This could be the wall or the eves of the roof which must oversale the wall. Have a look at your deeds for the house or a Land Registry map. Can be quite enlightening. Could be that you actually own a very narrow strip of land next to your wall which would then let you carry-out remedial works (probably at your own cost).

if it was me id dig down and put some 3 inch land drain in and fill it back up with the gravel then they have no complaint and it will solve the problem

Assuming origin of perceived damp issue originates from neighbouring property

If actions/lack of cause a nuisance then some legal recourse

Chartered Building surveyor is what you need for correct diagnosis and dependable advice

Be careful who you appoint. My agent appointed a 'suitably qualified surveyor' to diagnose and recommend a remedy for damp after complaints from a tenent in one of my 'buy to let' flats. (*)At the cost of several hundreds of pounds we implemented his recommendtion of forced ventilation in batheroom and kitchen. It wasn't until the tenent moved out that the 'check out inspection' revealed that all the original ventilation (air bricks and trickle vents in windows) were stuffed up tight with black bin bags stopping all air flow - these would have been perfectly satisfactory if not blocked by the tenent.

(*)We had to be able to demonstrate that we took her complaint and it's remedy seriously)

Definitely worthwhile. My mate asked his neighbour if he could buy a tiny (less than 1m square) triangle of land outside his fence to allow him to get his camper around the front corner of his house so he could park it off the road. They are in a corner of a cul-de-sac and the land was road-side of the neighbour's garden fence but he still flatly refused. Without driving over that grass he couldn't make the turn.

Couple of months later my mate wanted to do an extension and for some reason he was checking the deeds and found that the tiny patch of land was actually his anyway, so he went straight out, dug out the grass and put in tarmac. Neighbour came out guns blazing and my mate just grinned at him and said "you had your chance, check your deeds it's my land anyway mate"
