If you think that is a horrible job try doing the same job on a TDCi Defender, the entire dash assembly and heater has to come out!

Should have added that the plastic instrument binnacle is falling apart all the right side is cracked and the mounting lugs on the right broken off. Suspect combination of UV damage and being apart too many times.
Decided to splash out on metal replacements from Raptor (Birmingham), this will be another few hours to fit!

Never bored with a landrover, always something to fix or upgrade. Too many shiny things available for defenders though I'd be bankrupt.
What year is yours? I can see mine needing to be done at some point but it's not a looker, more of a workhorse so not too worried about at the moment.
Mine is a 1993 so it's not really surprising that plastic bits are getting a bit fragile with all the UV and hot/cold temperatures they have to deal with.

Just delivered: Bilstein B6 + 50mm gas shock's for the Defender. I recall wanting these on my Escort Mexico, though ended up with Spax adjustables. Ironic that I have bought the best shocks for my slowest car!

Headlining/trim out
All joints resealed with sikaflex and headlining washed down with bleach and mildew removed. Now all back together:
New shockers to fit next.

Decided to start on the shocks tonight, the bottom fasteners were corroded so I decided to save time and grind them off. Think I should of worn a mask, melted rubber is fun to remove from your face...

I had this mind set with British cars, the final one being an MGB roadster which required major bodywork repairs at 8 years old. This ended in 1995 when we had our son and i moved over to the big Volvos and the discovery of 2 days holiday at the end of each week.I think of it as a high speed tractor of largely 1950's engineering, so relatively high maintenance but easy to work on. Sad but I enjoy working on it

Well the A-frame ball joint proved a marathon.
The long 19mm bolts that go through the ball joint casting would not move after an hour with the heavy hammer!
so just took the assembly out:
Then angle grinder!
Needed the press to get the remains of the bolts out:
New super pro bushes, Gwynn Lewis greasable Lemforder ball joint with silicon seal and all new bolts well coated with coperslip
and wrestled it in with the propshaft out:
Glad that jobs done, was at it from 8:00 to 8:00 today bar lunch and dinner
what next?
