Diesel night heaters

Any one know much about them?
I want a heater that can be on whilst driving in my motor home?
I wondered if the EBERSPACHER type can be used?
Any idea what the Chinese ones are like?

I’ve been looking at them, they work like a warm air unit so air for combustion is drawn from outside, burnt inside a heat exchanger then out the exhaust. Internal air is blown over the outside so unless the heat ex splits you won’t get diesel fumes inside

Ive got a webasto air top 2000 in my defender, love it
Out of diesel in it this morning, i can't handle the cold anymore lol

One thing regarding the Chinese ones is how would you service them?

Toyed with the idea for years. When I get a van I Intend to keep il buy one along with timers ect. Walking out the door to a nice warm van at 6am in winter will be worth the costs.

24v units seem to be cheaper last I looked as a ready supply from hgvs seem to be sold on.

I had an eberspacher fitted to the landrover on a 24hr/7day timer. Fantastic bit of kit.

The one in the linky looks like an eletronic D series eberspacher.

Mine is 24v, im running it through a cheapo ebay step up convertor.

I think the one @winchman is referring to is the direct hot air unit and not the indirect units that preheat the water in the cooling system, swmbo has one in her horsebox and that chucks out enough heat to warm the living area. Works on the move as well.

ford galaxy's /alhambras / sharrans use a similar idea in rear and use a wabasto water heater that then then circulates the hot water through a heater matrix blower, like the one in your cab they can be got second hand they burn diesel but not sure on how they could be controlled, I fitted an erbesbacher heater, air blower to a motor home conversion and ran it off kero, using a separate boat outboard motor fuel tank, to cut down on running costs., of burning road diesel for heat

Fitted similar into a t5 and worked really well,
Ended up being around £700 all in, but was nice and toasty.

Eberspacher or Webasto the way to go. Usually plenty of used ones around - probably better than a new Chinese one!
Plenty on Ebay.

Never had owt to do with the Chinese knockoff's but they aren't that complicated so even the Chinese should be able to copy them easily, personally I'd still avoid the knockoff's though.

Fitted, repaired and serviced both Eberspächer and Webasto heaters on boats, to be honest with you the servicing is easy to do for anyone handy with tools, just buy a service kit that contains all the gaskets or be dodgy and just reassemble after cleaning it with the old gaskets (I alway fit new gaskets). Just bear in mind if the gaskets do leak you could get monoxide fumes in your vehicle.

They produce lots of heat for not a lot of diesel used, just watch where you fit the fuel metering pump as they vibrate so can be annoying if your sleeping near it, also make sure the air intake and the exhaust are well apart so it doesn't end up breathing it's own exhaust, they don't like that.

There are mostly self contained, 2 conditions for it to switch on +ve from the alternator and an ext temp sensor so that it only kicks in below 10°C (my sensor is replaced with a switch),

I managed to pick up an eberspacher D1LC for £150 and fitted it to the 110. It heats the cab to 30C easily. Great bit of kit.

Did the same so i could run it off free diesel from work

This may probibly win the silly question of the year, but could a system like this be used to heat a workshop?
It just occurred to me that it might be a solution for a shed as it is small, cheap to run, and runs off 12volt.

I could just see this in a little box outside, purring away (by the way, how noisy are they) and feeding hot air through my little shed.

Cant see why not, they are noisy on startup but soon settle down.

Thanks for the reply. I have just built my own little hut (metal, but now fully insulated), next to the hubby’s mancave, and am looking at better ways to heat both than silly little electric heaters.

Stick it inside the shed and just run the exhaust outside would be my choice, the combustion air intake can be from inside the shed. They aren't that noisy only a small fan and the ticking of the fuel metering pump.

Why not just add a second heater matrix?

The engine is making heat that is currently being dumped.
