As You mentioned the fan and shifting heat you where obviously meaning the air would travel out through open windows ,I was making the point that the air travels out with no control from us, now if you could make glass that the air traveled one way ie out but not in at the same time as retaining the heat then that would be expensive methinks,
The thing is with the electric cars they will still have to have massive amount of ventilation in winter with 5 people in them so heating will consume as much/more than the motors but they are now having to have water cooled motors so there will be heat recovery from that I suppose but only when driving unless it is stored ---- more problems to overcome.

Yes . The blower has to blow somewhere and with today’s cars being sealed the only way out is through the flap vents

Then moving on, the heat loss through the windows is where a great deal of heat is lost - otherwise when you turn off the engine and blower the car would stay nice and toasty for hours whereas in reality due to heat loss it gets cold very quickly

That heat loss is there all the time if the outdoor temp is less than the cabin temp

Yes, anyway electric driverless cars wont need windows and that will be better for the passengers especially when passing juggernauts within 1metre and a micro chip steering... I know it would for me anyway.
A little like its better that you dont know exactly when you are going to shuffle off this mortal coil

I'm considering rigging a water top webasto into our pickup. It does short journeys, has a dpf and isn't a great starter. A preheater could be run on kero or red and should help all round.

However, new isn't affordable. The used ones on eBay are but I'm wary of controller bits, has anyone and experience of retro fitting one of these heaters s/h?

Of course there is always Chinese versions but used German ones are tempting!

Have a look here. you need a thermo top from a Rover 75 diesel. Ive retrofitted them both to and MG ZT and my current Nissan Navara. controlling it with a £1.99 chinese RF remote plipper off Ebay and its the best mod Ive done to the truck, 20 minutes and its fully up to temp. The Control PCB is prone to a few comonents going faulty but you can rig up a simple test circuit and if faulty a guy over on the 75 and ZT owners club forum "frenchmike" will test and repair them

Shame the fuel pump is separate though, is it easy enough to choose a matching pump/burner combo from the mountain of bits on eBay??

What is the heater like in it? they are hit and miss on the navara, I have spent weeks trying to get one working its been bad for about 8mths fitted separate electric pump etc works for couple of days then stops, it is cyl head I think, cracked on the exhaust and pressurizes the system when pulling hard, but doesnt use water? even nissan fit a pump to some models its called a parking pump! the whole cooling system looks like it has been designed to cause air locks !!

It's fine once it's warm but no chance of that on the mile it toddles down the road every morning. It's fairly new (2015-16 I think) so hopefully no head cracks!

heater (make sure you choose one with the water pump). this ones listed as working but needs a new glow pin...

(Id strip it down and decoke before fitting anyway so its easy enough to fit a new glow pin)

the other option is to look for Rover 75 diesels being broken, again though assume they will need a strip and decoke and some degree of PCB fettling unless they can be seen working

There is one fitted to my sprinter but it has never worked while I've owned the van, it would be nice though if they can be repaired easily.

Re webasto thermotropic units -

Be aware, some are generic stand alone units, and some are linked to the hosts can bus.

The latter are not going to be easy, whilst the former are just controlled by a wire going high.

I have a couple, one was given to me by a friend, and one was pulled off a junkyard pergeot people carrier by myself. I pulled it, and paid a tenner.

If the code says Z in it, it's can bus. If it's c, it's got the circulating pump.

Pain in the but to bleed if a long way from heater !! now that is what I call micro bore pipe btw.


re circulating pump might be an idea to have a valve to stop water circulating through the block, then you could use it for just space heating for a camper using the std heater matrix (+ fan control) or a separate small fan and then open valve for 10 mins before cold starts for deep winter minus 5 ish conditions.
