It seems you wanted them against that back wall, and I gather they fit if you don't frame them...

Either make a plinth to get the height right, or a single frame to house both units where you want them?

Worktop height is a personal thing - just has to be comfortable for you.

They don't fit on the wall i wanted even without the frame.
One bench for both would be massive we may be moving soon so 2 benches may be better.

Went to order the metal.

Hopefully i didn't get charged foreigner tax.

40mm x 40mm x 3mm -- €22.76 (6 meters)

60mm x 40mm x 3mm -- €29.20 (6 meters)

Although i live ten minutes away they want to charge me €28.50 for delivery.

I should be able to fit them in the alhambra if cut in half and i take the passenger seat out.

I obviously don't know your local market, but those prices seem alrightish to me for a 'walk in off the street' deal.

Don't feel bad about the delivery charge, I've had that and worse ("yeah, delivery is 20quid - oh, you want to collect? Well, there's a £15 handling charge for collection")...

Thats good to know. They don't charge for collection and said they wont charge to cut them for me, so i may as well collect them.

Went to collect the metal the shop manager was not too happy about cutting them for free, I pretended not to understand what he was saying

Hopefully i bolted the wife's seat down correctly

A few newbie questions

I'm thinking about making the top and bottom first with 45º cuts.

With the top and bottom i will tack everything together before welding up.

That will then leave welding in the legs and feet.

To cap the feet will 4mm plate be ok?


Any pointer or if anyone could recommend a better approach that would be great. Remember that three of the bars in bottom rectangle are 60mm*40mm the rest is 40mm x 40mm

For the build of something virtually identical have a look at this thread, see how I do it, the only difference is the foot detail, you might want to consider making one of the legs a touch shorter than the others and fitting an adjustable foot, a bolt with plate welded to it is good enough, I would make the bottom rails high enough to get a brush underneath, and not just for cleaning out swarf that will get under there, you can guarantee that if you drop something it will disappear underneath the stand.

Thanks Paul i did read that when you posted it . Think i need more clamps and maybe i should have built the welding bench first.

At the moment the idea is to have adjustable feet on all 4 legs (feet with m12 thread some plate (4mm) and a nut welded to it)

But i'm also thinking about adding some castors with a pedal to raise it off the feet to move it. We will see how that goes

As usual getting side tracked. I struggle when welding as the light in my work room is rubbish. Thinking about getting a double fluorescent light for the centre of the ceiling. Or should i push on get the benches done and fit some lights above the benches?

I started cutting the metal today. Got the bottom frame done. The smaller side bars are 1mm short but i suppose i can leave a 1mm gap when welding?

The idea for the bottom frame is to have three at 60x40 and the back bar 40*40. Should i just use 60*40 for the bottom frame or can i use one 40*40 bearing in mind i will probably have to buy more metal.

Edit. I suppose it would have been ok if i hadn't put 45º on them. Will cut the back bar from the 60*40 also.

I have a FEMI ABS 105.

Got the bottom frame tacked up. 3 corners are perfect one is slightly off square. Should i grind the tacks off an have another go?

I would say yes, by all means do.

Thats a nice little machine with v nice results. I like it.

Welded the bottom frame today. The corners are a right mess burning through or big blobs/drips.

The rubbish corner welds were due to not being able to weld up . Down they are slightly better but i cant see anything and have to guess where the end of the metal is.

I now have two identical frames just need to get the legs in now and hope the cabinet fits

Because i have no faith in my cutting, welding or measuring skills decided to do a test fit before welding the legs in place.

One of the leveling feet on the cabinet is broken hence she is not sitting right. But i'm happy with that.

Providing the top fillet welds are not too beefy it should fit.

Had enough for one day my back is in bits . Note to self move the fobco drill in two pieces as its heavy.

I bent the leg on my current shop bought bench. I don't think that will happen with this one i can hardly lift the frame.

Going to finish the frame tomorrow and look at the legs and maybe wheels i can raise/lower if i need to move it.

@dazza : the Femi bandsaw auto descent mode works well or is it a "marketing thing"?

If you are only able to weld well in the flat (something like me), can't you turn the frame
at least at 45°? I found a noticeable difference.

All in all, nice table, a lot better than mine.

Thanks! after my poor welds on the ends i felt like giving up. Nothing the grinder cant fix.

I like the auto cut feature, while its cutting i get on with something else.

I kept the frame clamped down this time so did not turn it to make things easier for me. I didn't realise id be so bad at welding upwards.
