It's done, I went tooled like a Rambo locksmith, in the end I used my cordless recip' and a decent blade, bloody awkward cutting up but once the internal barrel nub had been defeated, pretty much plain sailing, in all took around 7 minutes.
Knew it wasn't stainless, was hoping I might see a bit of brass for my efforts, nope, all of it black malleable iron.

Many years ago I took a party of mates to Le Mans, we took a massive tent, would have been even better if we had taken the massive bag of poles............. trip to Carrefour to buy several cheap two man tents followed! another year a mate turned up with a tent in a bag but it was an inflatable kayak, the tent was still on the shelf in the garage, another trip to Carrefour..............dont say that once went hangliding up the yorshire dales one of the best days. went to rig the glider and found id left all the wing battons at home in a bag120 miles for nothing and no flying

It is direct and accurate answers like this one that utterly spoil this forum's chances of a proper block buster thread like the fabled "Winchman's Table".With a bit of effort we could have had at least five pages on "Where have you been for the last ..." , "How not to use the forum's search function" or any random subject (the more obscure the better).

Now you come to mention it, I have got an old unused water tank in my loft that may have a bit of asbestos in it that needs to come down for disposal that won't fit through the loft hatch.
With a bit of effort we could have had at least five pages on "Where have you been for the last ..." , "How not to use the forum's search function" or any random subject (the more obscure the better).

And a large roll of carpet that I put up there when I was 15 years younger and stronger that needs to be got down too. Any ideas?
Good few years ago - a submarine with a seized up hatch with someone wanting ideas/assistance in getting it open. I can't recall if anyone ever did . . .
Yeah, not sure if I should be thankful or disappointed, I did try the key again and rattling it with a cordless on hammer in the hope of freeing whatever was binding, nothing doing.Shocking how quick it was to get in really...and I bet not a lot of noise too
I think a 10mm drill would have been as effective but I thought end the agro and cut through. I'd gotten most of the way through, finished it off with a couple whacks and a cold chisel and the thing fell off.
Truly a Chinese crap made unreliable lock but it kept me out for a few minutes. Clearly more about the beefy deterrent look and nothing else, learnt my lesson.

Not as far as I know. The bloke that owns the sub hasn’t been on here for quite some while. No idea if the hatch is still stuck fast.
The submarine is still there - I drive past it often, but since the pier collapsed I’m not sure how to get back out to it!
It would be interesting to go back out on to it - was certainly a fascinating trip!

Well since you ask,
to me the obvious answer is to use the carpet and the tank to build a Montgolfier Brothers type hot air balloon.
The hard part will be making a launch route through the roof, mostly fixing it afterward really.
