Drilling a hole in mild steel - how hard should it be?

ive got 2 of them and after about 4 years i cant wear them out...fantastic quality as you rightly say.

Mine dropped through the door this morning, not as described on Amazon as they all have 1/4" hex Snappy shanks instead of 6mm. 8mm & 10mm. 1/4" hex looks a bit weedy to drive the 32mm cutter through steel but would be OK on GRP. I can see a complaint coming on with Amazon!

Realy good was drilling a load of 17 mm holes at 45 degrees to some 10 mm black bar and didn't even need touching up after over a dozen and this is outside what such a thing is designed around
Had a load of sds masonry bits too and they are lasting better than Travis perks punk brand

Anyone else used tin coated bits? My boss bought a load and the pilot hole is done In seconds with cutting fluid on a 5 mm steel fan. On a busy week we can drill hundreds of holes in fans and these are going strong.

I bought a generic TiN coated (from RS I think) set a few years ago, they've lasted well to be fair. Not sure whether they are worth paying extra over standard bits but they were in offer at the time.

What exactly is this TiN coating? When my boss rolled up with them he just said tin and I looked at him a bit funny but he insisted it was tin... However I now see that it's an abbreviation. .

yep..run them hot and you can see the paint burning off

I've got a few of these, they cost a bit but they do last. Resist the temptation to "just give them a tickle" on the grinder, because they won't be coated any more!

Used my TiN drills today, only a couple of 6mm holes in 3mm bar but they made easy work of it. I haven't used them in ages, but this thread reminded me to drag them out of the drawer.

Did these appear on your local Aldi? did they eck as like appear on my local store,getting worse for lies as well,store manager says probably while stock last...I says apparently not the website stated new stock.
