Yes not far off. Although for a Bridgeport a 12 or 18 tonner with a tail lift safer.
Most depots now have electric pallet trucks which help a lot. Good brakes and help a lot for heavy pallets.

A better question is.
Can I look at myself in the mirror if what I builds kills someone because I missed a factor that would have been spotted if it was IVA tested?
Use standard trailer approved parts. Under 3500kg over run systems.
You can get progressive electric brake systems for trailers.
Does the IVA now actually check the brakes work?
Or the integrity of the welds?
Or is it just a box ticking exercise to make sure the trailer is built to a specification?
And are electric brakes now legal in the UK - seem like a great idea but not approved here?

This overrun thing. I googled it and saw a piston of sorts, but that might have just been a small part of a kit.
Does this piston / overrun system work by going in-between the trailer and the vehicle, and the force of the trailer trying to push (over-run) the vehicle causes the brakes to be applied in a controlled amount, i.e. as the force on the push-piston increases or reduces, the brake application increases or reduces, kind of thing?
edit: ok, yep, found some info. I'm not sure I'll be making a trailer too soon. I might make a driveway-cart though. That will need some brakes.

I moved my Bridgeport mill in a high top Sprinter.....just rotated the head around....Nottingham-Bordeaux....
used their forklift to put it on a pallet and in the truck, used my 3CX at the other end....
Farmer with a load all perhaps....?....

There is a bit of a meal being made of this and we are overlooking “ will and want”. Many moons ago I single handedly managed to get a three ton mill off a trailer using jacks and old pallets to get it down progressivly, then with podger, scaffold tubes, will ,want and a few hours got the thing right through the workshop going over a four post lift and into place.

They check they are manufactured to an approved testable standard.
They check they are fitted correctly.
They obviously cant "test" the welds but if you turn up with crap ones it wont pass.
Yes elec brakes can be legal.

I’m wondering about elec brakes. I fancy making a fifth wheel trailer for the pickup. Bigger payload than a ball I believe
Electric brakes would be great as you can get brake controllers to stop sway etc.
Also easier to connect up and adjust.
Much bigger as you can transpose some of the weight onto the vehicle using up some of its payload.
In theory you could get a trailer that weighed nearly 5t but was still legal on a post 19-01-2013 BE licence as its MLPM would still be 3500kg.
You would need a pickup / vehicle with a payload of over 1500kg and can tow 3500kg at the same time.
Vehicle would need to have an unladen weight of sub 2000kg.
More realistic is a trailer of 4500kg real loaded weight plated to 3500kg with a 1000kg nose weight.

That's interesting to know was looking at trailers and ifors are easy to steal, will have to bear that in mind when I get around to re jiging my canopy and pickup load bed to something more usable.

Second hand mini artic turntables turn up on places like the bay of thieves occasionally, I got one off an artic landrover complete with all the air brake gubbins a while back. A small load compensating valve and hydraulic/air valve cut into the rear brake line activates load compensated air to the suzies which then convert back to air over hydraulics on the trailer.

I've so far refrained from going to have a look at this which is just down the road:
Not that I've measured it up and it would fit reasonably neatly behind the cab have just shy of a tonne lift at 3m and >250kg at >9m
Oh and for the skeptics even with a Bridgeport on the back with the crane I'd still be under the design payload by about half a tonne
before even bothering with a trailer.
