thanks for confirming, so from the picture would some sort of grub screw/ rod insert go in to the .250 through hole that would fit in the key way of the coupler to drive it. this was confusing me because i couldn't see a wedge in the drawing that would connect to the coupler. Also at the cog end what kind of attachment was used to connect this piece to the cogs as the cogs all have a pin insert in them as shown below.

You’re on the right track taz but Drummond don’t do complicated solutions.
Final drive from the last changewheel is transferred by a thick ring (think xl hula hoop crisp) with a axial hole to take drive from the pin in the cog and tapped radially for a grub screw to grip the key way/flat on the piece you’re missing.

No trouble at all, I had to make one for my lathe when I got it years ago which is why I knew exactly where the drawing was, it certainly helped me out.

I’ll try and snap a few pictures of it and the drive rings this week for you.

thanks, they say a lathe is the only tool that can replicate it self, lets see if that's true in my case. I'm on a steep learning curve as i bought the lathe more on impulse than a detailed plan last week. I last used a lathe many many years ago at metal work in school. Recently I've awakened to the joys of fabrication and machining having learned to stick weld over Christmas and now moving to gasless MIG. A picture of what you made would be very helpful. The schematic you kindly shared for the clutch looks slightly different to the one i fortunately still have, Picture below. On mine there is a key way on both ends, one that goes to the lead screw and the other that goes into the missing piece

I found a picture of a part of the missing piece on the net, the flat rod bit resembles the schematic, it would be nice to see what the other end looks like. Also learning about the gears, this looks like an interesting set up with the reversing gear (assuming that is what is in the ducks mouth) engaged, perhaps to make the saddle go back and forth?
