Ah - that’s when they get you….Ready? The only time I take it off is in the bath as it tarnishes!!
Not that many years back, the council was trying to offload a couple of houses in the no-go area that is Port Clarence... for £1 each. When looking for a cheap place to buy in 2004 just before Christmas a place in Teeside came up on Rightmove which was well within the parameters I'd entered in the Rightmove search .
A good solid cavity wall brick built 4 bedroom ex 1950's council , on a large corner plot that was also big enough for a decent sized three bed house or bungalow & small workshop .
I found an aerial shot of it ... with rat runs across both back & front gardens , other houses in the street & adjacent streets had boarded up windows. I chatted at length with some internet pals @ World Sea Fishing.com who lived up there and they said I'd need a dozen SAS types armed with pump action shotties 3 on the truck, 2 escorting the Mr Shifters , 3 back & front and one roaming about inside .
I looked things up in " Up My street " and got the police grime figure and all sorts of other useful info from the internet ... Once i'd collected & collated everything I was amused to think I'd ever even considered moving there even though the place was only £40,000 ono . I could have had four of them , all mortgage free.
The local council tried that a few years back with whichever flavour of 'asylum seeker' was prevalent at the time - moved them into a street that had the worst reputation in the town and nobody else would live there - having spent a fortune refitting all the houses to make them cosy.Good refugee & asylum housing if they are quality up dated /modernised then ?
The only way to effectively stop speeding is to mandate that vehicle manufacturers produce vehicles that cannot exceed any posted limit, anywhere at any time, and install whatever supporting infractructure this needs.*If you want better road safety, then you should want your taxes spent on genuinely effective policing and sensible action - not supporting a system that's much much more interested in your money than in any life.
The road outside my house has a 60mph limit. Some of the bends need 10mph. So technology wouldn't work there! The only way to effectively stop speeding is to mandate that vehicle manufacturers produce vehicles that cannot exceed any posted limit, anywhere at any time, and install whatever supporting infractructure this needs.*
However, since so much revenue is generated by those who have to wave a bigger willy, "speed sells", as much now as it always has.
*If you think this sounds far-fetched, look at 'smart' motorways. They spent a hell of a lot of money on the systems that are supposed to 'improve traffic flow' and 'make roads safer'; how long before they flick a switch and it turns into a mileage-priced revenue generator? Also, ever noticed how the majority of vehicles concerned with the maintenance of these systems have no company markings? You'd think if you were proud of your technology you'd want to tell everyone who you were.
They even padlock the manholes around there to stop cable theft. Not that many years back, the council was trying to offload a couple of houses in the no-go area that is Port Clarence... for £1 each.
That's the point though: it could. Suitable comms between a lamp-post and the car activate whatever limiting device(s) are necessary. The road outside my house has a 60mph limit. Some of the bends need 10mph. So technology wouldn't work there!
The a-holes pulled up some covers outside our old premises in Billingham, snipped a load of cables and then realised they were fibre-optics.They even padlock the manholes around there to stop cable theft.
Lift the lid there's another lid underneath. Big ass boron padlocks.
Lamp posts don't exist up here fortunatelyThat's the point though: it could. Suitable comms between a lamp-post and the car activate whatever limiting device(s) are necessary.
It's all doable with current, let alone future technology (you already have radar-activated braking systems, even on bikes); just needs government to alienate most of the population by implementing it.
Overnight those silly 400BHP German V8s would be practically worthless though
Ironically, limiting vehicles like this will actually cause some collisions. The only way to effectively stop speeding is to mandate that vehicle manufacturers produce vehicles that cannot exceed any posted limit, anywhere at any time, and install whatever supporting infractructure this needs.*

You've not driven my other halfs modernish Frod Fiesta . . . I realised why I get so frustrated behind such things . . . acceleration measured with a calendar . . . drop a gear to go up hills? Drop most of 'em . . .- your only safe "out" is to accelerate into space.
My Volvo does it on cruise control - I’ve not figured out yet how (could be cameras, or lateral g or GPS or some combination ??) but it will slow down when it gets to a corner if it thinks your cruise setting is too fast. The road outside my house has a 60mph limit. ...but I do look forward to the day (hopefully very soon) where there’s much more automation in our cars.
yesterday the windscreen washers froze, there is no heat from the "engine" to defrost them.
Britain does have one of the lowest accident rates in the World though!I have lived in a few countries and what I say is not meant a s slur on the British nor is it totally unique to the Uk.
But in my opinion there is fundamentally something wrong with a large portion of British drivers. I can’t say if it’s the entitlement that the rules don’t apply to them or the ego that makes them think their skills are soo much better than the other persons so they can drive 60mph around the corner whilst overtaking, but others can’t. Or if it’s the enlarged sense of bravado from the safety and somewhat annonimity of being sat behind the steering wheel.
What ever it is I’m afraid it will only be “Fixed” when all private transport is automatised. It’s a shame but the (not so) few have spoiled the freedom of driving. It would also stop the uninsured untaxed issue.
Ofcourse it doesn’t help that the Uk is so densely populated. And the road systems can’t cope.
