Elliott milling machine

It would be great if anyone had a manual for the U1 Elliott/Victoria that would help me rebuild it & that they could email. THanks

Hello All,
In case anyone finds this forum thread looking for the weight of U1 it is 1270Kg and V1 is 1346Kg. Although the U1 I shifted seemed a lot heavier than this and we had to remove vertical head, motor and table etc to get it to the trailer weight. However it is now running and what an amazing leap forward it is having only had a lathe till now. I have the pdf manual if anyone would like a copy - email me.

I can't find any evidence to suggest it is a Huron but it certainly appears stout and is a 40 taper to match the Elliott.

It would need some sort of belt arrangement to run.

Depending on your space, i'd go for another machine vertical head with the same taper. That head looks lovely but with all the modifiying to get what you need £650 is a big chunk.

You'd pay the same for a Bridgeport head.

I don't think it would be tooooo bad to get on, mount it on the overarm dovetails using the horizontal spindle as a toothed belt pulley (a bit like the original)

I wouldn't pay anywhere near £650.

You could always try a speculative advert and Homeworkshop. This is how I found my elliott Omnimill in the end, after trying to find a decent one for sale for quite a few months.

Is that the quite compact one like Allen Millyard has? Nice wee machine I think I'd be happy with one of them.

I know I'm definitely not a fan of Bridgeport's.

I'd love something as big as your mill. But I know some day, I am going to have to move it all and will probably loose access to 3 phase.
For this reason I went for something with a small foot print and universal. It's a good little machine, they hold their value given small footprint they fit in most places you can have a workshop.

It has 3 motors, vertical, horizontal and table. I run the V&H of one inverter and the table of the other. 3 morse on the vertical, 30 INT on the horizontal

That is a lovely neat setup, well done.

My mill isn't big, to be honest it's footprint will only be marginally larger than your omnimill, it will have considerably more mass I guess though. Very easy to move to be honest, engine crane handles it easily.

It's lack of quill and power feeds is the downside though...mechanical power feed on the X only.

Turned up today, doesn't appear to have had any particular use. Looks like it's sat on a shelf most of its days, covered in workshop dust and chips.

Stripped it down mostly already, haven't figured out how to get the quill out yet...there's a big return Spring in there somewhere...

Return spring is with a clock spring on the left hand side behind the fine feed assembly or perhaps it has a big compression spring above the spindle but unlikely.

Not on this there's not, no clockspring, the only thing left in it now is the quill itself, I've even got the spindle out.

Must be a compression or extension spring.

It's actually a return Spring too, unlike a Bridgeport where it's actually a balance spring.

There's a circlip I think will reveal its mysteries bit I didn't have time tonight.

I shall, but it's not for this mill, it's apparantly for a Huron but I can't find any evidence.

Some interesting surgery will be required to fit it.

Oh I see. @pressbrake may know if that’s for a Huron. It’s kinda the right colour.
