Favourite welding rods..

Fincord 6013 are my preference too. Although I manage to get peelers from the more recent Aldi rods 90% of the time, so they're probably not that bad (I keep them as 'emergency stock' and for quick and dirty jobs where I'm not bothered about how good the weld will be). I only really weld mild steel 2mm-6mm with an ac buzzbox though, so I'm not that demanding

Has anyone used Filarc 88s rods? I've just scored a few free boxes of 2.5 & 3.2, do they run ok on AC?

Murex 7018 HY80/NQ1 are my favourite.

I always liked Murex, but have been unable to get them locally at a good price. Mainly on ESAB now 6013 and 7018 depending on use. Critic Super 6 rods ( they will favour a side if you give them the slightest excuse etc) but they are real easy lighters and cheap so I use them for banging in tacks real fast and I will leave them in the back of a damp truck etc.
I used a box of SIftrode 7018 a few weeks ago from weldquip as an experiment and you know they were not too bad, was buying some other bits and thought what the heck and tagged them on. I seriously doubt your average Joe could weld better with a more branded low H

Hi. newbie here just got a welder for home jobs. my mate gave me a couple of 2.0mm oerlikon fincord rods to use on mild sheet steel. 2 types, one with red tip and the other black. found that the red tip one created very good bead and slag came off straight away but the other had prolems.. just to say, not sure what the difference is. any advise?

I hear Filarc 88s are supposed to be run on AC..

88S can be used AC but they will be much easier to use DC+. They are designed for use on Offshore Structures (withstand -50 oC or so). They are not a DIY rod or even a general purpose rod. Unless youre welding high strength steel Im sure a 6013 would be easier to use..........and cheaper (unless they are a job lot or something)

All the major manufacturers have rationalised (moved production somewhere cheaper) and whilst they will have done their best to maintain the properties of their rods there is always a compromise. That compromise is usually welding performance as the Metallurgical properties are tested under outside inspection and as such, indisputable.

Therefore not many are like they used to be. Some may even be better.

As with everything in life...........you get what you pay for

No but I served my time welding on them in Barrow and I am shortly leaving the RN submarine service after doing my 22 years

Right..........I thought it was a strange choice

I used to be in VSEL Barrow regularly (years ago now). We supplied the Dual Shield 101TM flux cored wire but it was made in the USA. I developed a MMA Rod and we did all the testing up in Rosyth etc but it was never used in Production.

Was that the 1.2mm wire we used in the big Murex MIG machines with a shielding gas? I was there 88-92.

I did most of my training in the welding school below the welding centre and then moved to the DDH where Fred was the boss his assistant was a little guy with a surname of Bennett.

Id expect the Selectarc to be better than the Nikko (Id gamble they are Chinese). The selectarc are French as far as Im aware.
