To be fair, my brigade wouldn't allow us to use the fire fighting equipment provided in any premises.
We carry our own extinguishers for that because we can guarantee them to work when we need them, they're tested, checked and charged on a far more regular basis than any certificated ones we'd find in any property.

I know hey are, I used to work with a company what supplied Wilshire, normally a pallet each time.
But now doing FRA and speaking to the lad Thy like to see cans when they are doing a Call out to suspect fire, They carry their own, as it was said, " I carry 1, but like to see more.

We are not allowed to either now.
So now death by Power point and then out side to set a few off.

No more burning old pallets and waste fuel.
Still got the chain saw I used to cut up pallets.

That's why I enjoy our conversations in PM and on the phone as e speak in the same terms.

But the brigade like to see cans so they can tackle, or in a big incident they can grab one and tackle break outs.

The extinguishers are only checked during 7.2d visits to satisfy the requirements of the Fire certificate so seeing more of them usually complicated things and didn't make any difference to our premises logs or alter our on arrival tactics. It may be different for other brigades.

The chip pan fire demo is the nearest you're gonna get to a real fire. It's been that way for at least the past 10 years. Some brigades are crippled by H&S, others just lamed by it.

I suppose things (like insurance) have changed since I did that in the late 80's?. When I used to do rally rescue we had a training weekend at Kidlington fire station where we cut a few cars up and learnt extrication techniques, then went to the local airport to practise putting car fires out.

What's a break out ?

Break out is when there is a small fire breaking out remote from the assumed fire. This can be tackled with the cans available.

Then they will decide, mostly I am told, break outs = get out and control.
After making sure no one is left inside.

It is a shame.

I was thinking that, but perhaps the BOSIET is different to fire warden courses

Spookily I just ordered an extinguisher for my boat around an hour ago before seeing this thread, I think in an fire offshore there would be more fighting and less running going on, at least to start with hope I am not tempting fate here.

This is the whole point of being properly trained in how to use an extinguisher, so you know how to use it if shutting the door and calling the brigade is not an option.

Funny, Ive been to moerton in the marsh a couple of times...first time there we got to play with more fire and real smoke in 4 days than a firefighter in 6 months, apparently. And got to drive a fire engine,totally irrelevant to offshore fire fighting but a boy hood dream box ticked, just need the blonde twins now!

This is a scary thing...no matter how big the boat or rig. I have worked or played on boats ships and rigs all my life, and there is nothing worse than having no where to run!

The FSC at Moreton-in-Marsh is not a local fire station, it's a purpose built, international accredited training centre which was owned by the government but is now in private hands, for what they charge companies for their courses real fire training would be expected without question.

I went there in 93 to see the finals of the world extrication contest, took advantage of the guided coach tour of the site.

I virtually lived at the place in the last 10 years, especially since they built the 'New Dimension' complex since 9/11 (Urban search and rescue). They had some good real fire training there especially the sub-sub-sub basement and industrial complex exercises but even they've been dumbed down since I first attended, you were guaranteed blistered ears and helmet on those (oo-er), the ship fire exercises were always good, real scorchers but again they've been tamed since H&S dominated.
