you need to fix the earth clamp to something bright steel unpainted your welding with no proper earth and you will struggle like hell with it

you also need your dial set somewhere between 2 and 2.5 on the welder

if that dial appears right your set at 5mm rods way too high your rods will melt like hell and not really weld to anything

i got given a clarke 101e with a pile of sealey 2.0 e6013 recently, managed to run a decent bead with them, they were hard to get going with a new rod but relighting them after the initial arc they were fine might have had some flus on the tip of the rod or something

Lol no im just off 2.5 mark so about 100 amps and where the earth clamp is i dkd give it avo over with the grinder i had but it broke half way through cleaning lol yeah im finding the forst arc alot harder then after its lite up first time

My welds were like that when I started. I found I was travelling too quickly. But too slow and the weld pool collapses. As before, watch the tutorials in the forum and practice, practice, practice. Welding rods are cheap at screwfix but can be a bit sticky IMO.
Auto darkening mask, even a cheapy from aldi/lidl will do to start. gives to two hands free, clamp the work down as well.

I followed this tutorial to the letter and it gave me a good grounding. I managed a City and Guilds out of it shortly afterwards.

What is thickness of steel you are using? Best get something fairly heavy gauge so you don't have to worry about blowing through and can just concentrate on the weld itself.

Have you got a better resolution of the picture above? It does look like you are traveling too fast, slow down. Keep a tight arc would be my second tip. Thirdly get some 7018 rods if you can, you can see the weld pool much easier with them which gives you a better idea of what is going on.

Crank the welder to the max power
Because it's a dual voltage machine ,the scale over there is related to 400V
So you probably need much more amps
The welds appears to be cold
Check also your ground and electrode holder connections

Yeah rods are from tool station 15 pound lol iv got a auto mask and yes i. Defo traveling to fast but soon as i slow up it sticks or weld pool says sod you work was clamped down when i was welding and i did waatch them.

Yeah iv watch them and am trying to follow as best i can for the min am using roughly 5mm plat tbh i havent even checked it yeah im deffo to fast but im way to slow aswell lol yeah im gonna get som3 other rods and try them see how i get on

Had it cranckd up 4mm rod setting and was burning rods in seconds and it is because its dual volt it sounds more like an electrical buzz rather then bacon fryring ?? Yes i think.i have a **** earth if you notic in the pic its not exactly kushty lool

too high a setting and it does not lay any weld too low and it sticks without arcing properly its finding the inbetween it hels to have good rods in the first place

it could be your rods taht are giving you issues go out and get some esab rods and try them out

as youve been asked what arc welder are you using ?

for starting and controlling the rod end I put my left hand in front of the work piece close enough so when hand is stood up its 4" high and rest the long rod on it with other hand i can control the push alot easier

I suffer from nerves that long rod goes everywhere

as its been quoted ive seen some hold the welding rod half way down to weld but you need good gloves as that rod does get hot

im using a sip 90 and also a oxford oil welder 2.5s from esab at around 70 amps

Like you, I have to steady the rod near the bottom end to ensure 'feed' as I have problem(s) with depth perception close up and often break the arc by not feeding as I should.

Tig finger helps me a lot as it shields the 'steadying hand' well as an 'add-on' to my thick gloves.
