I think from the pic that you've made an effort at cleaning your test piece, but try to get all mill scale, dust etc off and down to bright metal before you start - also ensure a good, strong earth [ground] connection.

I don't do much MMA, but really ought to get in more practise as I have to weld outside [wooden shed ] and it'd mean I could swap to that from mig if it's breezy and I want to get on with a job.

Like you, I have to steady the rod near the bottom end to ensure 'feed' as I have problem(s) with depth perception close up and often break the arc by not feeding as I should.

Tig finger helps me a lot as it shields the 'steadying hand' well as an 'add-on' to my thick gloves.

Iv only got sand paper to clean with at the min i bloe my last grinder up whoops im in a shed aswell with 3 door one of witch is nolonger a door since i rammed a mate through it for laughs one night lol so now 2 doors and a hole

How very dare you! I only switch from mig because of weather outdoors, I find it easier to work with. Wait until you try practising MMA on thin material(s).... Blow-through, hole city

we all have to be class room type when we want to learn something its much better than picking up bad habbits

ive been taught how to arc weld on thin stuff and i still struggle with it I weld better on thicker stuff

but a friend could weld on 0.8 thickness of steel and keep the rod going all the way down the metal

Not me bro its why i was taken out of school and home taught i dont do well in groups or with books im learn with my hands if you get me yeah im a mechanic some a few of.my mates are welders and they can do all that kinda stuff its nuts when you watch them on the real thin stuff dont know how they do it tig i mean not seen many people weld real thine with arc

Thrust me if you save little bit more money not to much , you can get something that probably will last 30 years

Yeah i can probz stretch to like 60 or 80 tbh but iv seen good ones for 40 so like the makita is like 60 so ill proberly just get that

I have two metabo ,an Hitachi, and an Hilti
But in your budget you could afford a small metabo or even a small Fein
Check out for those manufacturers
