I Think Screwfix 6013's are a bit hit and miss TBH. First box I use,d when I decided to seriously practice, were OK. this second box I find a bit 'sticky' Useable, but difficult. If it had been my first box, I may have given up. Sparky, get some decent 6013's and go from there. at least you will know it's not the rods that are at fault.

No 1 means ur practice the right way esab rods are good although 6013 would be a better choice but 7018 or 7016 xyz will do you well did not know Screwfix sold decent welding rods

Ahh i get you now im useing 6013s atm but they gotta be a load of rubbish gonna grab some esabs from screwfix there like £14 for 5 kg

Yeah i have a box of toolpak 6013s but think thwy gotta be part of the problem yeah i was getting that way after 3 hours of braking stuck rods away lol yeah i eill do thanks

Im not gonna lie the smoke is alot but the shed i work in has real good ventilation i.e its has two door ways but no doors

Hi there your welds have improved since your first pic. Looks like a mixture of low amps and moving to fast and try get your hand as steady as you can. Get your set at about 80 amps scratch or tap the rod of the steel that will get your arc going then the first thing you want to do is get your pool built up hold the rod still for a 3-4 count once the pool is build start slowly moving is across the steel keep the tip of the rod on the pool and keep a nice tight arc about 2-3mm from the plate listen to the sound you want it to sound like a steady sizzle like bacon frying if it starts changing sound it is your arc trying to go out just get your arc back close and it will be all good again. As long as you don’t lose the weld pool you won’t burn through don’t be afraid to go to slow as long as you steel is over 3mm you should be relatively safe . getting a good Earth is the most important thing and clean metal helps a lot but even in rusty metal you can burn though it and get a decent bead hope this helps

I also forgot to say always clean your slag off don’t try pick up a weld after a rod change until you clean the slag off if you have a good bead the slag will all come of in one if it is hard to get off check your angles it’s likely you leaning the rod to one side and creating slag traps

Im actually running about 100 i cant really tell tbh the gauge is utter rubbish its 3/4 between the 2.5 and 3.2 mm setting tbh i havnt actually done any welding since those picks where taken i think my rods are no good cant really tell not going to lie i havnt been cleaning between rods probz the reason for all the inclusion im pretty sure the plate is 5 or 6 mm and yeah i do need to clean it better still waiting on my new grinder yes it has helped thank you once the new rods come ill grt back at it i also need a much bigger work surface my work surface is 9 inc wide by a foot long its an old vice stand lol

When i do that the stick just grts dtuck in weld pool or i loose the arc

the rod will sick if you touch the plate you want to maintain a constant gap the same width or there abouts as the rod
