it will come with time mate, practising on small pieces doesn't help cos of the amount of heat you put into it, that was just joining a couple of pieces of 50mm angle together
I tried some beads of a spare piece of 6mm plate (larger piece), but I didn't get any peelers. The first photo shows a bead done @ approx 90-95 Amps and the second photo shows one done @ approx 100-105 Amps. Neither produced any peelers and the first one was a little too narrow and high - typical too low an amperage.
few beads run with the 4mm 6013s ian kindly sent me, they were surprisingly nice to use! not a peeler in sight though. didn't get a chance to do a joint with them. 1/2 a rod = one cut out powercraft at 160amp
Me and ChrisB had a bash with the 4mm 6013's on a piece of scrap 8mm plate that he kindly donated.
We got some nice results as can be seen below in the first photo. I slowed down my rate of travel and copied Chris's example - that made a fair bit of difference.
Later on when the welder was totally cool, I managed to burn a full 4mm rod without the thermal cut out activating. It did later on though, after I burnt a couple of 2.5mm rods straight after the 4mm. That was the first ever time the cut out - cut in.
I got the start of a peeler in the second photo, so I'm going to carry on practising. I don't think I'm 100% comfortable with doing butt joints or anything else as yet, I've recently changed my rod holder and I'm still not totally comfortable with it yet due to lack of free time.
Here's a link to the 4mm 6013's that I bought from eBay, incase anyone's interested in getting some for themselves.
I've had the welder going this week whilst unemployed and bored. First welding for about six months and it's gone down the pan, this was with an inverter too.
Undercut and spatter I assume? I must add that was the pick of the set, and I was messy with a 12mm plate fillet and 3.2 rod.
Doing a bit of training really in case a maintenace job should crop up where mechanical as well as elctrical skills might be beneficial. When a job advert says welding skills beneficial, you can never be sure what standard they want.
