So what do you do with one then, all I can think of is press bearings in

Press, punch, bend etc. It all revolves around the tooling. You could use one as a box pan folder, for example, for punching holes or slots, (a louvre in a panel is one example), pressing things in/out, stamping, flanging etc., etc. If the piece will fit and you can create/buy the tooling required, those are pretty much your only limitations as to its use for anything which can be done by applying pressure.

A guy who worked for me used one to fabricate engine frames to fit a mini but took a red top engine. We had the steel lazer cut and he fabricated it into a frame. He was very good at what he did BUT bloody idle. Hence I never made any money...although he did (until the gravy train ran dry)

It's a union horizontal borer that pic was taken ware I used to work, but sadly they closed down so I dought some stuff when it was auctioned off including the press but sadly I didn't have room for more.

You make up or buy dies and do virtuallyany kind of sheet metal work. Louvres, punching holes, folding, forming pressed steel shapes etc etc etc. They are great for punching holes in sheet steel, fast and accurate.

This is gonna sound really stupid but I wonder every time I see one on the bay, What do you do with a flypress and why would you use one instead of a different type of press?

u would use one for punching holes in metal. with varous dies fitted can produce pressed metal parts in large quantities verry fast by hand and not a lot of effort with the momentum of the fly weights

I wouldn't be without mine, probably the most useful bit of machinery I have, though in all the years I've been using them I can't recall pressing a fly with it!

Brings back memories for me, i was an apprentice for a spring manufacturing company, they did coil and also flat springs, and components. I was on flats, we had a room of around 2 fly presses and 8 press brakes, these were for the rail keys we made, We set the flypress up for the labourers to form all sorts from a washer to a full on complete item from a small bracket with a couple of bends to anything that will fit under the press.
As the apprentice i first started on the washer, punching out blanks, then the hole then linishing, i must of done 100`s of thousands, i still think it was to see what patience i had to stick at the job. Fingers were bloody raw after the days linishing.

Them auto coil machines, i just never got the knack of setting up, like a chinese puzzles.

I've used mine for:
hot forging (blacksmithing)
punching holes in bar / sheet
bending
cold coining/stamping
crushing pop cans before melting them.
crushing apples for cider

Never actually used it for pressing
