Meh. I wouldn't have done it personally.
...but that's because my aluminium welding is crap and I'm hardly one to judge other peoples welding.

Frayed knot.
Quite normal nowadays, most of the rims on my old X Type had been welded in exactly the same place as yours. The chap that did the last couple of repairs for me reckons that BMW and Mercs are some of the worse. Having said that, that was based on how many of them he did and there are likely just more of them on the roads.
The only thing I would say is that I did hear something about leaving the weld visible (obviously on the inside of the rim and not where the tyre fits!), but can't recall what for.
