Gas bottle valve help needed please

The brass bits won't cause sparks so there may be the temptation to try to grind it off, unaware of the spring.

Brass will not cause sparks but heat and friction from grinding may result in exciting times. Being a H&S dude for a day job I cannot for a second suggest you take anything rorary, hot or with the potential to make sparks to the main valve, not for a split second !!!

If I used a hacksaw would I not be taking the risk of creating a spark when the blade hits the spring that's within the valve?

Just saw round the perimeter of the valve.

Speaks someone with experience, perhaps I should have kept quiet, I thought forums were to help each other and throw different ideas about.
I have the confidence mate to do what I need to, in this case I did not have the experience so I asked for guidance.

good advice there parm, I was shown a couple of times how to do it before I tackled a bottle myself mostly due to the fact I heard all the horror stories about things going south quickly, and then there is the folk you see on you tube and the like that tab at the bottle with a stihl saw and you can clearly see the valve still in situ I tend to watch the rest of the video through the gaps in between my fingers whilst I suppose its natural selection.

Always fill it with water after removing the valve, displaces the gas and ensures a good bit of safety before cutting.

Could even leave water in there while cutting ?!

Yes it will be filled with water and stood at an angle when I make the first cut, I would feel safer and happier once I have a few cuts in the door, Would I be right in thinking it would then be safe to empty the water out and Carry on cutting?

Hint when cutting the door opening - cut along the top, bottom & hinge side, weld the hinges on then cut the opposite side to the hinges, that way the door stays in place when welding the hinges.

Mate, I didnt mean to put you down or anythign but it just came across all a bit too OMG we could have a disaster here. No one was born knwoing everything (though some may dispute that) and we all have to start some where and make mistakes as part of the learning process, Its just that in this instance the mistake may not allow you to have another learning expereince.

For a day job im a H&S consultant and all too often see the aftermath of when things go wrong. If you are confident then go for it, even if its your first time as this is the best learning experience.

In my first post i did suggest a fairly robust workign methodolgy but there was alot of come back on not using an angle grinder on the valve. I did not suggest this for a second !! Cut of the shroud/cover then unscrew the valve.

I was only trying to be sensible and offering you adive to ensure that you dont hurt yourself.

Once you have mastered the art of getting into a bottle it is actually quite rewarding to see what you can create. Have a look at the picture on my Avatar, its an outdoor cooking stove that ive made

Yes that's great advise, I noticed it earlier in one of the many threads.

Obviously the bottle door once cut out will leave a slight gap from the cutting tool, this gap will allow air through the door so how do you guys get a good air tight door? Having had wood burners in the past I know that closing the damper in the flu settles the fire down but such a door gap will cause the fire to blaze like hell or smoke something terrible one the damper is closed.

You could weld a strip all the way around the edge of the door, that way the door will sit flush when closed as the new welded strip would rest against the cylinder when closed, and overlap the cutting gap if you see what I mean ??

I thought that might be the way go, I have a length of flat bar which could be cut to fit the inside of the door to give a lip.

Once I get started I will take pics beginning to end and include all the steps I have asked about,

That's ok, I had no intention of going anywhere near a sealed bottle with a grinder or even a hacksaw, the wise option was to ask those that have gone before me, I did have a look on YouTube regarding the valve removal to see a guy sitting on a bottle, big hammer and chisel then lighting a fag before banging away at the valve, not a wise move thought me lol.

I have no fear in attempting this but since I am going to make it I thought I would pick a few brains to make the job easier and safer, it's going to be a damn sight easier then the go karts I have made in the past.
