welded, grinded, sandpapered, cleaned with thinners, painted. Had to change product becuse I cant get hammerite locally. So that didnt go well, but, its not like the rest of the paint is pristine, im not that fussed so long as its not rusting.

Tyre carrier next, have started assembling bits.

@stuvy yes a very primitive swing away tyre carrier. I have 40x40mm square bar that I'm going to bend into shape with oxy-aceteline, to make the arm of the carrier.

I havnt used oxy since I was a kid, I do remember i did like it.

My dads calling by tomo, gonna see if he has a clue on how to proceed.
I have the most of the bits, but I'm foggy about how to make a pin or locking mechanism. Suggestions appreciated

In my minds eye I'd like to drill a hole in the centre of the bar and send a pin, with some sort of spring, through the bar and into a hole in the bumper, to lock it in place.
I havnt yet researched what that pin looks like.

This below is what I was thinking of, but the plunger isn't long enough to go through the bar into the bumper, so I would probably weld it onto the side of the arm.

@ned quick question, is the spare wheel mount going to swing away or fold down ?
I was thinking if it folds down it could act as a temporary load holder for extra dirty kit.

i see a few aussie tyre carriers with over center catches to lock them shut against a stop on the bumper, stops the carrier from rocking up and down on the hinge from the weight of the wheel.

also small trailer stub axles as the 'hinge' is also quite common.

and don't forget a pin to lock it in the open position

all assuming it's a swing around one.

@pint cheers bud, yes thank you for that, over center catches are indeed away to do it. Sometimes its hard to find the names of things, I had seen those but did not know the name of the product. Thanks!

Did a ton of work on this over the weekend, but dont have pics of it all.

I added a step to sit the tyre on (still braced in the pic below). I have checkerplate for that step.
I worked on the spindle which il describe later, it is primitive but it will work.
I welded the pipe that recieves the spindle, to the bumper. I braced that side three times before welding, its braced in the pic below.
I worked on the plate that will hold the tyre.
I made a mockup of the swing away arm, using 30mm box section steel, and then my dad helped me bend 30x30mm sold steel bar into that shape, which also was sucessful.

So now ive got these various bits, and I need to weld them together. I'm worn out though, so im going to take this evening off and not do anything.

I tacked the bar onto the spindle, will burn into it later, some pics

only the middle brace is permanent

the fit is really good! really happy. Now to not mess it up

I have it cocooned in a brace and I'll weld it later.
Probaly it will take a few days on this weld alone. Brace it, wait, weld it, wait, cut it out flip it over, brace it, weld it, and so on

I ran some heat into this with a blowtorch before welding, that worked! Hopefully the other side comes out so well. I'll be adding a gusset to this also.

nah was a conscious decision, if im pulled in on the side of the road then i dont want it swinging into traffic.
Good point though, I did dwell on that question.

Meh put it on the top tailgate and fit bigger gas struts / motorised ones then it's always out of the way

Second pin to stop it hitting the body?

My old rav4 the rear door wouldn’t open fully

Sorted that by removing the stay
