I think the problem is....or soon will become, determining reshelled cars.

Ultimately the most collectible condition is totally original low mileage no rot,dry stored, etc.. which understandably commands the highest price. How many will be reshelling with a view to pass them on as original?

'Bangers 'n Cash' featured a barn-find Cooper S in a recent episode, complete with VIN plate. You could have poked your finger through it, but it sold for an outrageous figure.

If you put the old reg plates on nobody would ever need know.

They're currently ruining a BMW e30 saloon with a straight-6 transplant, for which they paid £3,500.

They's manufacturing a bodykit for it at VAST expense....

Thats right, i seen that mini being winched out of the shed it was stuck in for donkeys years. Rotten as a pear, useless unless it was reshelled. Anyhoo, who is to know if you drag a rusty wreck into your shed and reshell it over a winter ? Don't go blabbing or bothering the pen-pushers and no one is to know.

Wouldn't the new 'Heritage' shell have a different chassis number, so first time you tried to SORN or register it, the game'd be up?

and the bmw is sorn'd just like the mini.....if these cars are so "desireable" why are they hidden away.

also that must be the cleanest restoration ever as I dont think any of them have worn gloves tonight or got their hands dirty.

Always impressed there’s never any gas axing of bolts, or broken knuckles or anything on this show. It’s almost like someone has been through before hand loosening everything up......

Well, it IS telly. Shades of this fellow, he used to present a B & W programme with components [e.g. brake hub/drums/shoes ] on a bench to explain how you could "Do it Yourself", no mention of all the grot you'd find under your car.

Amazingly that £20k rotten Cooper S that had to be moved on a pallet wasn’t a terrible deal as far as genuine S projects go.
Very few of them are really worth what they go for but once it’s done with its provenance there’s collectors that it’d find a home for a very healthy sum.

As bad as the body was you could rebuild it if you were a real martyr.

No Heritage shells don’t have chassis numbers in fact Leyland didn’t even start stamping chassis number into the body until the late ‘70s early ‘80s.
They’re classed as a replacement part so in theory all you need to do is paint your new shell swap all your bits over and away you go.

The DVLA does also have a points system which would technically stop you from building a whole new car and sticking an old log book on it. It only really works if you’re dim enough to tell them what you’re doing or go shouting about it online though.

Problem is the one on the shell, tucked well away, won't agree with the makers plate on a re-shell. Do you tell DVLA and get a new makers plate made up, or quietly forget about it and rivet the original makers plate onto your shiny new shell, or fake it properly and put the original body numbers onto your new shell? My new body numbers were stamped into a piece of sheet steel, spot welded onto the inner frame.

Catch 22, if it is bad enough to need a shell, it is a category A write off, and if it is a category A write off you can't put it back on the road no matter how well you repair it.

Ok for example I have an MGB GT

I have a bad bang in it and the INS company say “Beyond economic recovery “ (cat A is break only I agree ) .

But cats B/C/D can be put back on the road as far as I know .

No-one is going to reshell a 08 plate mondeo .

I think there’s a line with older cars as to what’s acceptable and what’s not

Also having said the above ...

I’ve seen quite a few Cat C write off that should have been break only imo ....

Conversely I’ve seen a few cat A cars in salvage yards that looks an easy fix , to be told it’s break only .

It's a bit of a black art, as far as I'm concerned.

Perhaps to do with the price and/or availability of what might appear to be common spare parts, esp electronics, what with possible recoding etc?

I suspect even if the 'bump' is slight but sufficient to deploy the airbags, it could cost £000s to replace them + dash + sundry interior trim +possibly seats etc?

That makes it beyond sense to fix it with new OEM parts . (Right under law to be put back where you started )

How they grade a “wreck” is beyond me
