At what point does the replacement of rusty old parts stop being repair and stray into a new build?
I'm reminded of the so-called 'restored' Rolls-Royce from the 1920s I came across. In chatting to the owner, I discovered that about 90% of it was made anew.
Took him 20 years, mind.

Done a 911 with 70% new steel Iv still got the wings from it

I was thinking the same, watched the work that went into the motorised louvred light covers and spotted some ball joints that would be ideal for some throttle body linkages I need, never knew they were made that small Just need to remember what he called them

They do that every week, can't think of a single vehicle that has looked better after their "improvements" than it did at the start of the program. They also usually ruin the handling too.

Ford and mazda have been sharing parts for years - at least from the 80s maybe earlier. My 323 is a TX3 under a ford badge. Identical almost.

I'd rather watch a good honest restoration but all they have done is assemble some expensive bits and that American guy does a bike build and deal while all this is going on, It's like an F1 budget on an episode of wheeler dealers.

Mine came whole but BER to that owner at 500 quid .

I'm about 2 k in parts FG Sebring this that , heritage this that for panels ..

And a full A pillar body cut (full front end ) 100 quid .

As I said where does the vintage match "repairs "

Has no class and more cash to blow than is respectable .

Yeah re-shelling is legitimate. Ringing is putting a new identity on a stolen vehicle.

So, ringing is not the exact right word, but buying a piece of junk and totally replacing every part, like the mini in the show, then pretending it is still the original car, how does even begin to be legal?

Maybe reshelling was legal once, but with modern monocoques, unless the body is from the original manufacturer, with a receipt, it’s not allowed any more. Not my opinion, it’s in the rules.

I used to re-shell Avengers and Hunters when they were current models, working at a Chrysler dealer, so it was quite kosher then and still is.
When I say "I', I mean the bodyshop did the majory bit, I put the oily and sparky bits in.

went to a mini show years ago and there was a rear engined k20 mini which was built with new everything and he had managed to get a brand new plate for it, think it was probably 56/57 plate at the time. he had to jump through alot of hoops prooving everything was new apart from the engine which was proffesionally reconditioned

That was long before the DVLA 10 point drama came into existence, and it is still legal to do it, with a genuine manufacturers shell.

I somehow doubt whether any modern cars get re-shelled like the old days.

Catch 22, if it is bad enough to need a shell, it is a category A write off, and if it is a category A write off you can't put it back on the road no matter how well you repair it.

When our dad was on recovery he pulled a cut and shut that had split in 2

New mini shells are made by heritage using the original tooling and processes as austin/rover/bmw and are classed as the manufacturer now so is 100% legit to reshell a classic mini.

They have a heritage chassis number and certificate to I'd it.
