it's not really fair on you as a trader tho i know how it feels when i get stuff on site and if fooked due to poor handling it comes out of my pocket not the person responsible have you had a word to the plp at fault at mabe a discount or allowing more time for checks to be made

The multi-drop carriers are like blue-arsed flies so they won't normally 'allow' people to check for damage... I sign for goods "un-examined" as a matter of course now.
The problem arises when people report (or don't report!) any damage outside 24 hours.. the carriers don't then want to know.
It will probably seem trivial to people, the odd wheel... "Oh why not stick a solid steel one on for the sake of a few quid".. but a few quid is profit or not on a 180amp machine; it's the '****-end' of the industrial market!!

i agree with you think the pice they are are very good most £400 machines are toss so the extra you spend on a portamig is great and like i pointed out drop 48Kg on one spot its gonna break no mater what its made of and i've sent you picks of my welder that's well fooked that was a £400 thing and it fecking melted so i can't see what all the fuss is about the wheels being toss I'm sure you sorting it our asap as soon as the man comes round to remove my kidney i'll have one off you that blue pice of **** in the garage is gonna get burned at the stake for welding heresy and i will be posing picks of that think stake 20L of petrol a car batt 20m of 2 core wire and a manic grin on my face when it go's woof FLAMING DEATH

My portamig arrived slightly damaged a year ago. It does weld well though.

The carrier was clearly at fault (ANC IIRC) BUT I complained and suggested that about 10 pence worth of webbing used to secure the machine to it's pallet could avoid the same thing happening in future...

I work in transport and provide a quality service - if you hear about things / see things getting damaged it is often because they're not packed properly. Sure you get monkey drivers who are payed peanuts and dont care about stuff - STOP USING THEM.

Just like Welders - I payed more to get a decent one - same in TRANSPORT, WHEELS and EVERYTHING!!!!
You SHOULD get what you pay for....

Anybody know how they are shipped...I mean are they in a cardboard box, a crate or pallet etc?

(This comment is not specific to portamigs but mail order in general) I guess its really the chance one takes when one can't be arsed to go to a "local specialist" who might charge a few quid extra but will have unpacked, checked and assembled your purchase and will have given you an opportunity to chat face to face. (Call me old fashioned)

We have sold literally hundreds of toolboxes (not those 5 drawer cantilever but the huge 40" plus wide stacks now found in many garages) Many distributors had them delivered directly into garages via a pallet courier which more often than not caused issues with damaged goods or clueless muppets causing more damage during a small amount of assembly. Our customers were being charged four figures and therefore (I considered) deserved a better service so always took delivery, unpacked assembled, checked and delivered personally to avoid such hassle and damaged reputations.

There is something to be said for "the cheapest supplier" but if a manufacturer/supplier can't be trusted to package an item correctly or knowingly employs crap courier's then cheapest may not always be the best option.

My Portamig came on a small wooden pallet with the machine strapped on then in a big box.
I think what has happened is that the machine has moved on the pallett drop down between the slats and bust the wheel

If that is the case of being battered by a forklift, it may be better, for the end user to fix the wheels on. Having said that they arent the lightest thing in the world

With all the fuss my wheel caused last night, dare i mention that the earth lead came away in my hands this afternoon ?

I was getting bad welds and sort of spatterring globs etc. So i checked the gas, then the earth, nothing seemed amiss. so i ground a better earth for th clamp and carried on. This time no sparks at all. The wire and gas were there but no juice. So i traced the earth wire back from the clamp and as i got the the earth plug on the from of the Porta, it came out of the plug in my hands. A shiny new copper cable end, that didn't look much like it had been crimped properly at all! Maybe they had the Polish apprentice working on mine ?

pics below first is both offending items together, the wheel and the recalcitrant earth wire.
Next pic is wire with earth plug, on top of my shiny red non snap-On toolbox. which thought it was getting a new trolley for itself to zoom about on. Alas my Portamig had other ideas.

Easy to fix, and i happends to me often. Inside the rubber bit is a brass bit, the earth cable pushes up inside the brass bit and is secured by an allen key grub screw. just loesen the screw refit the earth and tighten back up. Last set of leads i fixed i was wondering why it wouldnt strike an arc, the earth was connected to the bench and no matter how hard i scratch the rod against the work it would arc up, i could hear the fan on the welder so i know it was working, was getting real annoyed turned round to check the machine and the live side had come adrift from the connector

Dont see many of them about now.... mate had a van, to do the clutch, he tiped it onto its side with a fork lift. He didnt care much for it!!!

Them earth cables, if its the allen key ones, have a thin copper ferrule thing over the cable, then clamped with the grub scrwes. Or they just pull out.

Bloody hell Si.....you aint lettin them away with much here!!. You have got a point... Can I just say the mains leads earth etc on my Greenbird are thicker than my Italian and British machines.
