just bypass all the wiring and run a direct supply to the motor from the converter . take readings of voltage and current with clamp meter of each phase then its either the converter or the motor . it would be easier to take the motor in and have it checked after u have tried the direct wiring aproach if u are having no results

well after farting about with it the best part of Sunday, I've given in, and handed the job over to a sparky. I'll let you know what he finds.

Meanwhile I modified the cabinet to take a 3 draw Snapon Cabinet, I also cut a cupboard into the left-hand side upright before I painted it, should keep things tidy. I bought some HD drawer runners from B&Q for the cupboard, so I can take full advantage of the cupboards depth. Though I haven't got around to fitting them yet.

Well, just had a 3phase sparky round, and he says there's nothing wrong with the lathe. He doesn't know enough about RPC's to check that out though, so is going to call his mate who does.!!

As it is the voltage is dropping down to less than 280v, and the amps are upto 9.

Suggestions please

Have to admit I didn't read all the posts.
You could try winding the overloads in, or wire around the overload on the wild leg contact.

Reversing opens the overloads on my mill, It's the voltage drop on the wild leg that does it, when you suddenly stop and reverse the spinning spindle. It started to happen when I had a fiddle with the tune, I got them within a volt while running. The wild leg voltage drops as the load increases, you need to have the lathe running, then check the voltages. The wild leg voltage of mine, no load, is something like 460V and I tuned it so I got 426V with the lathe taking a cut. the transformed voltage is 426V


I have just read some more of the posts,
I think the wild leg is L3, L1-L2 would be the transformed voltage. It should be easy to check that is correct. If that is correct the voltage looks to low on the wild leg, mine[using L1-L2 as transformed] are something like 426, 450 460. And you load figures are all over the place, my transformed voltage doesn't really vary under load. Can't you borrow another motor and verify the converter works.

The growling from the converter sounds like the starter caps coming back in. Mine has something like 200Uf of starter caps and starts probably in less than a second, the switching is all quick and smooth you don't really notice anything happening. I have the switching controlled by voltage rises on the wild leg. If the starter caps are not in long enough the motor is slow to accelerate to speed, to long and the idler motor growls.

Did you have a diagram of the converter?

No wiring diagram, when I spoke to Transwave, they said their kit has had so many different revisions unless they had sight of it they wouldn't know which one it was! I left in the hands of a sparky, I've better things to do than stare at bits of wire

How did you get on with the spark, did friend fix the problem. I basically had the same problem as your self, I was so frustrated that I ended up buying a silver drive inverter converter. Plugged it in and straight of the bat it started and has worked ever since. There was a problem with M300 lathes, like getting them to work using a static converter.
The converter I purchased was recommended by the 600 group for using with the M300.
For 11 years everything has been fine up till yesterday. Lathe works ok in normal drive, whenever I have to use the reverse, it is dead. I did a google search which brought me here. Anyone any idea how to put this problem right.
I plan on rebarreling a rifle soon and cutting imperial threads means I must keep the threading lever engaged and use reverse to get back to the start after reaching the end of the thread run.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Sorry if I am Hijacking the thread.

I sorted the problem this afternoon. well not really sorted it, just got it working ok now with the help of a spanner to give the square bar a little pressure to click the reverse switch, it was not quite knocking the cam over.
I hope you get your problem solved, that sure is a nice Lathe you have. I also like the snap on box mod. the Cogs are turning. Was it a particular model that you used to do the mod.

Underneath the screwcutting gearbox the sq drive shaft is connected to a threaded bar, this in turn is connected to a cam that engages one of two micro switches (F/R).

Turn the power off and open the leccy box up, in the top righ corner you will see the micro switches and cam. Adjust the threaded connecting rod so when you engage both directions it acts upon the switch.

Hi thanks for the info regarding the rods. I will adjust them tomorrow.
Is the snap on tool box just slid into the space already under the Lathe?. I thought you had to maybe modify the opening to get the tool box to fit. Sorry if I got that wrong.
I have two Gorilla large toolbox's that I keep all my Lathe tools in. They have a design flaw, the drawers have quite a fair gap at the top of each drawer, you could slip your fingers so far in. I would prefer a nice flush finnish. You get what you pay for I suppose.

Yes I had to cut the front lip out, and the lip the cupboard door butts to. I kept the bits to weld back on in case I sell it

look at the id plate on motor , it will say 3 phase 240 and 415 if its dual voltage just 415. if it isnt . all so if theres 6 conections with 3 links it will be dual voltage

Best advice by Mr Brightspark, cant really tell by this piccy but mines a 3hp 400V 3PH only. Its run off a digital inverter exactly the same way it would be used in industrial applications ie power to switch in control box using all the contactors etc.

I do have a Transwave rotary 4kw for backup, but hasnt the grunt.
