Heating oil increase this morning

I've not been in this property long enough nor cared enough about it to really understand how much oil is in my tank at any time.
The people we bought from just said they filled it when it was about "there" on the tube.
We've always in the past just chucked 500 or 750l in when it got there.
I'm now in the position of getting overly hung up on prices. And was getting quotes from our local for 1000l, which dropped by 2p a litre in a couple of hours this morning.
I notice if I go for 800 or below it's 4p/l more then for 1000l, but can I fit 1000 in???

1200l tank and this is the level. To me I'm guessing it's about 1/4 full, but the scale cant be linear due to the voids in the tank construction and outlet height??



For reference we usually order when the sight tube level is 50% lower than it is now.
Seems like a good time to learn how to get a better idea of how much I have at any point.

Luckily my place was built with those 6" "Celcon" thermal blocks as the inner skin (facebrick outer skin) -. I figured the air gaps there for the purpose of preventing damp transfer, and I didn't want to bridge it - and I was proved correct)

Last house I built I used thermalite blocks inside and out, outer was rendered. That was a warm house in the winter even without the heating on, also nice and cool in the summer. I agree about the cavity wall filling, unless the outer wall is 100% impervious there will be damp transfer.

98p per litre
Last time I bought some it was 48p

Energy costs are crippling ALL of us - and making manufacturing totally uncompetitive - same in Germany.
Gas costs USA wholesale - $8.80
Europe - $70.05
Gas has dropped bit now - but demand is very low as winter not here yet.

Worryingly much of Europe is switching from Gas to oil - so best get those central heating tanks filled now - I think.
Anything could happen of course.

They should be building "Passive "houses, they hardly use any heating, cost something like £20 a year. I was going to build one , they can come pre fabricated, but finding the land is near impossible.

I'm also on the Buildhub forum. A nice lot, many who've built to or even exceeded Passivhaus standard.

I visited one, incredible and super efficient. Warm, quiet, draught free. Many are built to look traditional.

Can't really build anything in the UK these days unfortunately....I'd really like an eco home but its a nightmare in the UK. If you buy land you can't build on it...and if you buy an existing house to knock it down you'd have to go through a load of planning.

Unfortunately for the UK energy is mostly priced in USD...with the pound dropping so low it's adding to out problems I think.

I beg to differ. They have MVHR systems recovering about 90% of the heat. Inlet in every room brings in fresh air, extract takes out warm, moist, stale air. Passes over a heat exchanger. The houses are generally dust free too. Of course there's filters to change periodically. Many of the folk have respiratory issues and they say it's so much better.

Only about 70% efficient the single room ones. But yes they do work.

They are not really efficient retrofitted, in a designed house they are built in so you don't see them. they feed fresh air into the bedroom, living room, and extract from the bathroom and kitchen they pass over a heat exchanger so you have warm fresh air coming in. the walls a quite thick (up tp 2.5m) and the outside temp has no effect on the internal temperature.

When we did our house refurb 10 years ago I was looking into them (whole house system)...I was going to run it thro the chimneys which aren't currently used but ran out of funds and scrapped the idea. The house has a chimney running down the kitchen/bathroom as well as bedrooms/living room so would have worked out well.

I'm wondering if people will start trading down for more efficient homes as energy prices go up....bit pointless living in a massive house with huge bills. Friends who have new builds have a lot lower bills it seems....mine is 1930s with solid walls

I'm not writing this to be smug, it's a comment on how, if applied nationally, rather than my microcosm of a home, renewables could help living costs.

I'm sat looking at my OF7 Rayburn that I dump excess wind/solar into after the hot water cylinder is hot (don't ask how, it's complicated). It's not quite hot enough to cook on, but with a better designed cooker it absolutely could be. Wind does not cover but subsidises heating in the winter. In summer, all hot water, heating and, if I could only build a better machine (a modified everhot is probably the one), cooking would be catered for with renewables at much less cost than all fossil fuels. Even at pre pandemic levels. Yea, you have to look further ahead than a single election cycle for investment to pay for itself but is that really so hard?!

Big fan (hoho!) of ours in the extension. It's by no means passivhaus but we dry all cloths there and is always condensation free. Must try to get another one or two for this winter in the house.

They're a bit steeply priced for what they are though I reckon.
