Exactly this.I thought it was energy policies from the last 20 years of governments.
Remember it's not just Britain but most of Europe!

My lad is "nice" and intelligent too - no harm to anyone (just no practical use to himself or anyone else either). The lad can find 50 reasons not to do something/anything, but never finds the one reason TO do something / anything.
Not how I tried to bring him up, but he was just like a stubborn mule. He'd never kick you, but you'll never get him to move either.
The US news does not cover European news in any significant way .The government will step in and stop it happening. My concern is how they are going to do it.
One solution is to give the suppliers new much higher fixed term contracts. Lower than now but too high for business to be competitive in the long run.
Hopefully they will de couple other sources of generation from the gas price. Wind farms are now getting paid something like 7x what they normally get as the gas price has shot up which is madness. This is also happening with nuclear and solar. The running cost haven't really changed so some people are laughing all the way to the bank.
100% agree.A clever comment I think, read elsewhere:
"All they need do is delink the gas price from nuclear and renewables. At the moment the wholesale price of electricity is all based on gas generated electric.
Why should the tax payer support extra profits for generators where it costs no more to generate than it did prior to the gas price rise".
100% agree.
They are going to do this in Europe.
I hope to God Liz Truss does this and not just borrow borrow borrow!
It will never happen , as it is not in their interest to drop the prices , as when the price doubles / triples , so does the vat , green levies etc .Next there'll be an official admission then that we've artificially been paying over the odds for X years.
Looking forward to the big rebate!
And it is still far far cheaper than electric - God help people with heat pumps! On the whole I still think oil is cheaper to run than mains gas. Obviously you need the space for a tank and suitable access, the boilers tend to last a lost longer.
For us the key is having a decent size tank and filling up when the prices are low even if you don't need it.
Even at todays prices I know our heating is cheaper to run than our neighbours gas and their house is smaller.
When they buy power from the grid it is sold at different prices depending on the source, that how they can claim to only buy from renewable sources, in reality it's all one grid.It will never happen , as it is not in their interest to drop the prices , as when the price doubles / triples , so does the vat , green levies etc .
And to offer people handouts is just handing us back our own money , to pay tax with again and hand direct to the big boys ,but also put us further into national debt doing so .
I won’t go on in fear of getting the thread locked , but this morning just ordered 500 litres as we are down to a couple of days . Was £506 for that . We burn approx 1300 to 1500 a year for heating and hot water old cottage . So we are now , like most laying the equivalent of one persons “average” monthly wage for oil .
It bugs me that vendors are allowed to advertise and claim that if you're buying your electric from them - that you'll be getting all "Green" produced electricity. When they buy power from the grid it is sold at different prices depending on the source, that how they can claim to only buy from renewable sources, in reality it's all one grid.

so many of the public are so galactically dense that they accept such drivel without question.
Then send them a worn out "tanner oner" and hope they don't notice. Bit like tower bridge.Maybe California wants to go back to steam.Could We talk Them into buying the Flying ScotsMan?
I know , it’s the same as when you at offered a green policy …. Let’s say in “theory” if we could supply 20 million homes with nothing but pure “green” electric , and they reach the limit of 20 million , do they stop selling green policies or just keep taking the money …When they buy power from the grid it is sold at different prices depending on the source, that how they can claim to only buy from renewable sources, in reality it's all one grid.
Ah but you can't just decouple theelectricity price from gas, since gas is used to generate electricity when everything else is short (yes renewables and mostly nuclear). Unless of course you subsidise the gas price? The US news does not cover European news in any significant way .
But things look ominous in reports about Germany and Poland and such places.
Several gas powerstations have gone bust in the UK. Including Baglan which was very advanced. They expected them to sit around doing nothing until they were needed. Caused havoc for companies on the energy park there. They had to bring in generators for the sewage pumping system.Ah but you can't just decouple theelectricity price from gas, since gas is used to generate electricity when everything else is short (yes renewables and mostly nuclear). Why? If the supplier is buying wholesale green electricity, and selling you or I the same amount then it's green. It bugs me that vendors are allowed to advertise and claim that if you're buying your electric from them - that you'll be getting all "Green" produced electricity.
It's nonsense.
It's like me running a bathful of cold mains water, then pouring in a cupful of Spring Water.
I'd be seen as a mental case if I then dipped a cup into the bath, and then tried to present the contents as unequivocally the Spring Water!
What's saddens me - is that so many of the public are so galactically dense that they accept such drivel without question.
