Help finding a bearing or seal

Anyone know the best place to find a replacement seal like this?
I know it is off a lathe but put it in the general section as a gearbox with a shaft is common to cars and all sorts of applications!
Been leaking through the pulley - someone had sealed it externally in the past with some gasket compound.

i have replaced some older style seals like that on my lathe, don't get to hung up on the metal cased style of it, an equivalent modern seal will replace that.
measure the shaft size,housing size and width of the old one and find a suitable replacement nitrile or better r21 or r23 seal, it could be imperial sizing depending on age.

Do you mean I don't need a metal type? How does it get pressed in?

they are hard rubber cased......metal seals are old school now........
plenty of options out there so size is never a big prob.....
most bearing suppliers have an online size/style search box....
I tend to use www.bearingshop.co.uk.....they will sell in ones or two's and happy to post....

Always worth going in, out of maybe 10-15 visits to my local one I think they have only ever actually charged me 2 or 3 times!
Last time I went for about 10 o rings for a 1950s hydrovane. Was about £50 for them at the cheapest online place (all different sizes, had to buy them in pairs)

Local place didn't even charge me!

There will still be a metal ring inside the seal, just coated both sides - there has to be to hold the seal in place see the sectional drawing here https://www.bearingboys.co.uk/Oil-Seals--Differences-between-R21-and-R23--119-a The 'full metal jacket' seals were pressed in like core plugs on engines, purely an interference fit with the sealing material forced into a cavity made by brazing, soldering or rivetting a shaped plate on the inside. The 'modern' (used for the last 45 years at least!) moulded ones are much better as they use composite materials more suited to the job.

The pulley also needs a seal between it and the shaft, maybe an o-ring.

...... and check that any shafts/ bearings are running true , or the new seal will be short lived.
You don’t mention the make of engine but “ owner clubs” often have useful info on such things and any mods to deal with design short comings.

I replaces two metal cased ones on my lathe with rubber cased a couple of months ago, they came from Bearing Boys, can't fault them. Pictures here.

Can probably just pry it out with a screwdriver, but I'm a bit of a butcher at times.

Pry the case off carefully with the correct tool. You may find that it is a repackable leather seal.

Frankly I'd be replacing it with a modern equivalent unless it was £££ in which case I'd just cut up some leather...

Someone else suggested them to me the other day.
Due to work not easy for me to escape at sensible times but exceptions can be made

I've always gone there for stuff like that and always come away with something to do the job, I know they bought up loads of old stock as they built the business up

That is what I was wondering. Perhaps tracking along the woodruff key?

It's the seal between the pulley & shaft that also needs replacing, looks like a bit of leather in the photo, an 'O' ring should do it.

Needs a photo of the corresponding end of the pulley to give a better idea of the profile.
