Herbert B drill

I'm picking this up on Sunday, it cost me £50. I haven't got it yet so all I've got to go on is the pictures uploaded by the seller but I can't see how the speed is changed, the seller told dad it was single speed but I don't really believe him as he seems to think (because it has tee slots) that it's a mill/drill.

There's two steps on the pulleys to give two possible speeds but I can't see what the A, B & C refer to, any ideas?


The motor plate is quite hard to read but it looks like it say 220/240/380/440, so I could wire it for 240v and run it off my lathe's inverter.

I'm still on the lookout for a big drill (Something like a Progress No.1) as this is tiny and fast but I couldn't say no for the price.

It is single speed. At the moment. There are some pulleys and belts missing.

Judging by the numbers it was/is a high speed drill.

that pulley arrangement looks weird, is that a polvee belt?
looking at the gearing the speed is well out from the rating plate.

Seems like very high speeds on the rating plate. It suggests there should be a mechanical method of changing 3 speeds for each of the 2 pulley positions. i;e
6 speeds in total.

You think that's high speed, there was one on eBay in Oxfordshire recently with a top speed of 18000. It sold for more than twice as much too.

That would be good. Proper piece of kit. A couple of pics with the lid off and I'm sure we can figure out the speeds. Someone mentioned polyvee belts, I had a pollard high speed drill for a bit and that had poly belts, I was surprised because I thought they were a relatively new thing and the Pollard must have been from the sixties. They don't get much better than herbert anyway.

Herbert --- High speed drilling machines and many with two speed motors, you will see the large diam pulley guard above the motor. I think some had 5-1 ratio.

Is using my lathe's inverter a reasonable idea? I would need to put a mains switch on the lathe so only one machine comes on at a time, is there anything I'm missing?

You might have to change the motor parameters each time you change over.

What parameters are there?

Number of poles and amps, so long as your motors are similar you can leave it on one setting but if the number of poles are different you would have to change it each time.

Depending on your model of inverter it may be able to hold several different parameter sets? We used to use Keb ones to drive 5 or 6 different motors and select the parameters according to which motor was connected.

I didn't set up the inverter so I don't know but I've got the instructions somewhere so I'll have a look.

Luck being the operative word, I've been looking out for a nice drill for about 4 years. I would imagine most workshop machinery is more scarce in Ireland so it's even harder for you.

I've got my eye on a nice floor standing geared drill with speeds down to 100RPM. It'll need repairing but I think it's within my machining capabilities. Can get it delivered on a pallet too so I don't have to drive anywhere.

waiting to get some ali to have go at making new set of pulleys for one of my presses to slow it down.
other options are 4th set of pulleys or washing machine drum pulley.
if you need pulley's let me know club had some from old dead stuff, they were in box of bits they take to shows to sell for donations.
